I think this is a YMMV situation, but I carry a US passport and what I was told in 2013 by the LA Consulate was if I had to transfer terminals (from North - which has most (all?) other carriers) to South (which has Saudia), I needed a transit visa. The implication seemed to be that if I was transiting in the same terminal, one was not required. I also think there may have been a time requirement (over 12 hours? requiring one regardless of terminal factors), but the consulate didn't seem to be sure.
I actually wanted to spend a little time in Jeddah (2 days), so I got a transit visa - that was a major hassle in its own right and it was valid only 30 days from issue (which was not disclosed at the time I applied). I'm told the LA Consulate no longer processes transit visas (DC Embassy may still do so).
I happened to fly Saudia into JED and saw no sign, anywhere, for international transit; it's quite possible this was poor markings, or related to our arrival gate, but there seemed to be no alternative but queue for immigration (which was a 3-5 hour wait - it was by the worst immigration experience I've ever seen, and I've traveled very extensively). There were no airport staff visible to query regarding process - the only people one could speak with were guards - who either didn't speak English, or did not know anything about visa/transit requirements (I inquired as I wasn't sure what line to use), or the actual immigration official once the line reached them.
Anyway, as this was in 2013 - things may have changed, either for the better or worse, but my sense is using Saudi Arabia as a transit point is more of a pain than most places.

Any day more preferable... Tried VN recently, good reverse herringbone products on new 787. Super friendly and warm staff.
