I think the fare rules say no stopovers permitted - but anyway, I didn't try for any; I'm arriving in and departing SYD on exactly the same days as a redemption I already had booked using AA miles.

I've gone for ARN-DOH-HND-SYD-SIN-DOH-CPH for €1903. (QR B788 x3, QR A359, QF B744, QF A333).

23h15m in HND on the way out, 23h55m in Doha on the return as it's somewhere I've never been.

Widely available, just need D or I class availability. It shows up on the Matrix correctly, then just choose an online travel agent of your choice that is able to piece it together. I booked on expedia.nl to get a price in €.

Edited to add: Dont forget that until 31st July QF operate to NRT. From 1st August onwards they switch to HND. QR fly to both anyway, B77W to NRT and B788 to HND.

You can route for even more miles and interesting aircraft by going via HKG on the inbound for the same price.

More miles yes, but where is the interesting aircraft? I specifically chose SIN for the A359, a first for me. If you go via HKG you have to take CX to DOH if you want a decent seat, otherwise accept the QR A332.

Is anyone able to find D fare bucket on the return? Every itinerary I seem to find shows D on the outbound and I on the inbound and D is a higher fare class I believe.

A good question, I can't seem to find out why it is pricing some as D and some as I. I have seen D both ways on the Matrix, then one way turns to I when pricing it up via an OTA.

For ARN-SYD as an example there is ~€80 difference between the fares (R/T), but the I fares are non-refundable, US$300 change fee, whereas the D fares are US$150 for cancellation or changes.

For my searches I was only ever being presented with the opposite, I on the outbound, D on the return.

There is plenty of D availability on all segments in my search(D should by default be more available than I) and you can push it on ITA by '/f bc=D;'

Why by default? I is a 'lower' fare class than D, and the I fares are the lowest.

Then comes the hassle of finding a travel agent to ticket it, or calling QR etc.
