I'm afraid there are no 'deals' on positioning to CMB from UK/EU as far as I can see, at least on carriers which are part of an alliance; maybe more knowledgeable members can chime in.
If you're willing to give Kuwait Airways a shot, they can offer you ~$1470 RT in business class FCO-CMB.

Also available one-way for half the price. Works to CHC, WLG, MEL, SYD, and BNE.
The one way price to WLG / CHC is ~$668 while the one way price to SYD / MEL is ~$775.
Appears you can build in a stopover as well (e.g., CMB - SYD (stopover) - AKL).
You can also get on the LAN A340 for the SYD - AKL hop if you don't want QF intra-Australia J

Seems many of the fares (in the 13-14 range) being shown on Orb are coming back with "As flight availability can change rapidly based on traveler demand, the flight that you have selected is no longer available. Please make another selection."

problem to find dates with sin-syd(mel) and akl-mel(syd) availability.
on my dates mostly sin-syd akl-mel was available.
all flights operated by QF.(had some emirates codeshares, but i need tier)
new year dates.
stopover in MEL and SYD.

Building on raporot's advice, it appears to me as though you need to stick to LK & QF (or EK codeshares). Trying to book the A380 on the MEL-AKL was very elusive, and ultimately I couldn't find anything that priced all the way through with that. Sticking with LK & QF did lead to a confirmed priceout.
OJ with AKL/CHC and avoiding MEL led to a $1362 in Q4. Aussie stopovers pop it up to the $1400's.

Yep, bummer, looks like I missed out, can still see it on ITA but not coming up on any of the airlines, silly QF don't even have CMB as a destination on their drop down, One World QF, get with it Australia. I do not know whether this can be classified as a good find, as CMB is home to many of them; but I find it quite a value personally.
September to November, many dates have this pricing.
Itinerary is like this: CMB-(Sri Lankan Airlines A320 business)-SIN-(Qantas A330 New Business suite)-SYD/MEL-(Qantas 738 business)-AKL and same on the return legs.
Stays from 3-10 days are valid in my searches, YMMV.
