This thread is to discuss the historically annual premium class fare sales that occur for travel (mostly TATL) during the US Thanksgiving holiday period.

FAQ

Q: When is Thanksgiving? What travel dates are covered in the Thanksgiving Day sales?
A: Thanksgiving in the United States is observed on the 4th Thursday of November.

The week of Thanksgiving and the weekend after are considered to be the busiest period for US domestic air travel due to large numbers of people traveling to spend the holiday with loved ones. As a result business travel demand, especially for international business travel, is unusually weak. This drop in demand is believed to be the origin for the Thanksgiving holiday international business class fares.

Typically these fares are offered for travel outbound from the US in the period from the Sunday before to the day after Thanksgiving. Return travel is usually valid for the day after Thanksgiving to the following Wednesday.

Q: When do the Thanksgiving fare sales start?
A: Sometime in the summer with an average start date of Aug 4.
The first reports, by year, posted on the message boards of Thanksgiving holiday sales are as follows:

2015: Jul 25**
2014: Aug 9
2013: Jun 18
2012: Jul 11
2011: Aug 8
2010: Aug 18
2009: Aug 11
2008: Jul 2
2007: Sep 22

**In 2015, on Sep 30 OW initiated a very brief 2nd round of discounted fares. It only lasted about 18 hours.

Q: How good are the Thanksgiving sales? What are some typical prices?
A: Many times the Thanksgiving airfare deals are the lowest TATL premium class fares offered the entire calendar year.

The lowest prices reported to the board each year are as follows:

Note: All prices from here on out are all-in round-trip/return prices in J unless otherwise noted.

Yes, I noticed some downgrades, e.g. UA 944/945 ORD-FRA-ORD is now a 763 in November - resulting in a cutback of some 20 premium seats per flight leg.

I would tend to agree. In 2012 I booked discounted business class (to Istanabul) Thanksgiving fares on Sep 1, 2012. In 2013 I booked (to Madrid) on Sep 4, 2013.

In 2012 I booked BOS-CDG-IST-FCO-BOS in J for Thanksgiving on July 31st for $2661.50 ai. That fare for that particular itinerary never dropped below the price I paid (I still have the Yapta airfare history).

I booked on 30 June 2013 EWR-AMS-EWR (vacation, not MR) for $1673 ai as last year the sales started pretty early.

Nice; thanks for this. I'm seeing $1801 rtn on IB non-stop JFK-MAD which is reasonable (I'm not maximizing miles earned; would rather a non-stop)...on the A330 (new J), too. I recall that in previous years many of the EU (OneWorld) airlines didn't join and we were 'stuck' with UA/DL/AA/etc (US Carriers) at the $1500 price point.

More historical data on start dates of Thanksgiving US/CA > EU business sales from these very Good Deal Premium threads.
These are the first sightings of T-Day sales reported on the board:

2014: Aug 9

2013: Jun 18

2012: Jul 11

2011: Aug 8

2010: Aug 18

2009: Aug 11

2008: Jul 2

2007: Sep 22

Generally most of the discussion took place in the 2 weeks following the first sighting, with not many new fares reported beyond that.

Spain only it seems. Fares to AMS/CDG/LHR are still outrageous.

*A are absolutely matching. LH $2100 for MIA-MAD 11/25-11/30. Multi-City MIA-MAD/MAD-NYC also opens up a ton of options (LX/LH/etc, plus OW) for around $1940 rtn, too.

Not 100% sure of how good of a deal this is, but I will throw it out there as a baseline. LX JFK-LHR via GVA or ZRH in F (books into A on TATL and J on intra-Europe) is just over $4230 AI RT. Similar price on AF via CDG, and LH via FRA or MUC.

I remember last year around this time there were great J fares ~$1,800 r/t ai to Europe from BOS during the week of Thanksgiving. Does anyone remember if those came around in September or was it October?

It was July & August in past years. They're out already here: try BOS-MAD, ARN. $2000-$2100 this year, though.

I was able to do an open jaw MIA-ZRH-ARN, MAD-FRA-NYC to get LX C and try LH's new C. Still out there, too.

You wonder what's so special about the Thanksgiving fares anymore.
We just had a sale to Europe until EoS and many of these fares were LESS than those for Thanksgiving!
