This thread is to discuss the historically annual premium class fare sales that occur for travel (mostly TATL) during the US Thanksgiving holiday period.

FAQ

Q: When is Thanksgiving? What travel dates are covered in the Thanksgiving Day sales?
A: Thanksgiving in the United States is observed on the 4th Thursday of November.

The week of Thanksgiving and the weekend after are considered to be the busiest period for US domestic air travel due to large numbers of people traveling to spend the holiday with loved ones. As a result business travel demand, especially for international business travel, is unusually weak. This drop in demand is believed to be the origin for the Thanksgiving holiday international business class fares.

Typically these fares are offered for travel outbound from the US in the period from the Sunday before to the day after Thanksgiving. Return travel is usually valid for the day after Thanksgiving to the following Wednesday.

Q: When do the Thanksgiving fare sales start?
A: Sometime in the summer with an average start date of Aug 4.
The first reports, by year, posted on the message boards of Thanksgiving holiday sales are as follows:

2015: Jul 25**
2014: Aug 9
2013: Jun 18
2012: Jul 11
2011: Aug 8
2010: Aug 18
2009: Aug 11
2008: Jul 2
2007: Sep 22

**In 2015, on Sep 30 OW initiated a very brief 2nd round of discounted fares. It only lasted about 18 hours.

Q: How good are the Thanksgiving sales? What are some typical prices?
A: Many times the Thanksgiving airfare deals are the lowest TATL premium class fares offered the entire calendar year.

The lowest prices reported to the board each year are as follows:

Note: All prices from here on out are all-in round-trip/return prices in J unless otherwise noted.

I saw Toronto-Serbia for around a $1000 - but don't if works during for your dates...

There's YYZ-IST-MXP (TK) for 2,016cad on flighthub.ca, if you're interested. Although, you need to position yourself.

I wouldn't worry - do you think airlines like to fly empty planes?

Having said that, be prepared with a Plan B, and be flexible on airlines and departure cities. I once had to reposition to JFK to take advantage of a super BA F deal (in my mind) during Thanksgiving.

DFW-MAD is J0 2 months out (nov 18). Sounds like they're doing just fine without sales.

At this point I don't see it happening.

There are so many quotes from "The Princess Bride" that can be applied to daily life.

Today's application - "Get used to disappointment."

Sorry, but that seems like a cherry picked statistic. Practically all other days are J9. Besides the traditional Thanksgiving sales cover travel beginning on the Sunday before Thanksgiving (see the FAQ), which is Nov 20.

There are sales right now. For example, NYC>XXX Thanskgiving fares were released in late July. It's just that the "sales" this time are $2500, which is a good bit above what we've seen in the past and therefore not really notable.

All this being said, it is extremely late based on historical data for them to initiate the deep Thanksgiving discounts that we've been accustomed to. Earlier sales also usually started off with 50 day Adv Purchase, and we're rapidly closing in on that date.

Doesn't mean it won't happen, but Magic 8 Ball says "OUTLOOK NOT SO GOOD."

I know a cheap one ex-YYZ for only $1,000!

Kidding aside, here's something that works if you can position in YYZ.

YYZ-MXP for under $1,700
https://goo.gl/flights/7rTq

Save another $100~ if you book via flighthub.ca

Edit: here's the booking link from flighthub that shows $1,558usd

Ahh those Thanksgiving fares are now so gone. Nothing came up this year. Then there are random sales around Thanksgiving but no more super cheap travel to Europe for Thanksgiving.
