This thread is to discuss the historically annual premium class fare sales that occur for travel (mostly TATL) during the US Thanksgiving holiday period.

Q: When is Thanksgiving? What travel dates are covered in the Thanksgiving Day sales?
A: Thanksgiving in the United States is observed on the 4th Thursday of November.
The week of Thanksgiving and the weekend after are considered to be the busiest period for US domestic air travel due to large numbers of people traveling to spend the holiday with loved ones. As a result business travel demand, especially for international business travel, is unusually weak. This drop in demand is believed to be the origin for the Thanksgiving holiday international business class fares.
Typically these fares are offered for travel outbound from the US in the period from the Sunday before to the day after Thanksgiving. Return travel is usually valid for the day after Thanksgiving to the following Wednesday.

A: Sometime in the summer with an average start date of Aug 4.

the std x-mas fares are $2.5k and this year they have been mostly advertising x-mas = Thxgiving. Some airlines have a$2k fare for both now (which is cheap for x-mas) but some still have $2k for thxgiving and $2.5k for x-mas.
Don't think this will incentivize pax enough to make another trip for thxgiving is they charge $2k.

Why would this year be any different than last year? Business travel picked up in 2014 but that is exactly what we don't have around thxgiving. My guess is they will come down further; FRA @ $1700 or so.

I've set up alerts for Thanksgiving week (Nov 24-29) from NYC for several European cities (LON, PAR, BER, PRG, HEL, MAD, BUD, LIS, MAN) and the first one that dropped below $2k was Madrid this morning at around $1820 from NYC.
I'm with cfischer and want something around $1500 so wondering if we'll go anywhere this year. I started looking at packages to Iceland [in coach
] but still hoping something pops up.
I'm actually doing it for a vacation and not a MR so don't even care what carrier as long as it's lie flat.

For what it's worth, United seems to be redeploying a lot of international capacity on domestic routes for the Thanksgiving travel period ... or at least more than is usual for that weekend. There are a number of domestic 777, 767, and 787 routes that aren't normally on the schedule. I still think that we'll get a sale, but it feels like United, at least, is taking aggressive steps to manage capacity during that period.

And the continued growth of EK, EY, and QR in the home markets of those European carriers. EK/EY/QR are less of a threat to North American carriers due to distance.

Actually a lot of ex-US fares to MAD/BCN did the same. MIA/FLL/DFW > MAD/BCN are at $2300-$2400ai. LAX/SFO > MAD/BCN are about $2800.
Not great, but if you get creative with routing you can get down to 12 or 13 cpEQM/cpMQM.
For SkyTeam flyers, try routing through FCO.

The lowest "Thanksgiving" fare out of AUS, for me, was around $1500 on CO and that was to OSL. For the last few years, the price has been going up and we've upgraded a coach leg and upgraded a J leg - still didn't pay less than $1600 pp. So I will call BS on $1500 fares - unless they are from NYC. Expect $2K range and you'll be ok.
Regardless, I'd love to be proven wrong with some $1500 J fares from anywhere. I don't think that will happen though.

I didn't see Thanksgiving 2013 fares show up, really, until the end of August. I booked on 10/30, JFK-ATL-DTW-LHR//DUB-ATL-BOS for $1563.
