This thread is to discuss the historically annual premium class fare sales that occur for travel (mostly TATL) during the US Thanksgiving holiday period.

FAQ

Q: When is Thanksgiving? What travel dates are covered in the Thanksgiving Day sales?
A: Thanksgiving in the United States is observed on the 4th Thursday of November.

The week of Thanksgiving and the weekend after are considered to be the busiest period for US domestic air travel due to large numbers of people traveling to spend the holiday with loved ones. As a result business travel demand, especially for international business travel, is unusually weak. This drop in demand is believed to be the origin for the Thanksgiving holiday international business class fares.

Typically these fares are offered for travel outbound from the US in the period from the Sunday before to the day after Thanksgiving. Return travel is usually valid for the day after Thanksgiving to the following Wednesday.

Q: When do the Thanksgiving fare sales start?
A: Sometime in the summer with an average start date of Aug 4.
The first reports, by year, posted on the message boards of Thanksgiving holiday sales are as follows:

2015: Jul 25**
2014: Aug 9
2013: Jun 18
2012: Jul 11
2011: Aug 8
2010: Aug 18
2009: Aug 11
2008: Jul 2
2007: Sep 22

**In 2015, on Sep 30 OW initiated a very brief 2nd round of discounted fares. It only lasted about 18 hours.

Q: How good are the Thanksgiving sales? What are some typical prices?
A: Many times the Thanksgiving airfare deals are the lowest TATL premium class fares offered the entire calendar year.

The lowest prices reported to the board each year are as follows:

Note: All prices from here on out are all-in round-trip/return prices in J unless otherwise noted.

Same here, and had 3 kids on the 2-11 yr old fare so netted about $1000 per person for 2 adults and 3 kids. Would love to return to Mallorca next summer on a similar fare.

Small shift today I see on LH and LX. Looks more like the pricing I saw back in July. Maybe some movement soon?

I decided not to gamble and used a few miles to position to YVR and got one of those approximately US$2200 ex-Canada fares to Europe for my holiday. I'm sure that now I've done that, there will soon be an abundance of US$1500 fares appearing It's still a lot cheaper than anything else I can find.

2200USD ex-YVR is expensive, there were 1500USD ex-YVR fares to Europe offered just a few months ago! :P

I know! Unfortunately I wasn't in the market for fares then. Everything else I see from LAX or SFO is around US$7500 unless I want a really long layover in IST or SVO. I can live with this "sale."

Yes that would be excellent. Especially as the AARP discount ends in October!

Don't procrastinate! When you see a good fare for November at any time of the year, book it! No need to wait until August or September.

It's all a matter of perspective and timing. I've flown my fair share of sub-$2000 US-Europe fares, with and without the BA discount. But with standard J pricing in the neighborhood of $3500 or more, $2200 isn't too bad. You just never know if a rock bottom fare is going to be available when and on the route you plan to travel.

Starting to get a little worried that no fares for Thanksgiving are popping up. It actually seems like it's cheaper to fly TO the US for Thanksgiving than out of it, which is a little boggling.

I am 100% locked for Thanksgiving in Florence (Mom lives there). Does anyone have any recent historical perspective on whether I can expect the fares to show a little movement in the next month or two?
