This thread is to discuss the historically annual premium class fare sales that occur for travel (mostly TATL) during the US Thanksgiving holiday period.

FAQ

Q: When is Thanksgiving? What travel dates are covered in the Thanksgiving Day sales?
A: Thanksgiving in the United States is observed on the 4th Thursday of November.

The week of Thanksgiving and the weekend after are considered to be the busiest period for US domestic air travel due to large numbers of people traveling to spend the holiday with loved ones. As a result business travel demand, especially for international business travel, is unusually weak. This drop in demand is believed to be the origin for the Thanksgiving holiday international business class fares.

Typically these fares are offered for travel outbound from the US in the period from the Sunday before to the day after Thanksgiving. Return travel is usually valid for the day after Thanksgiving to the following Wednesday.

Q: When do the Thanksgiving fare sales start?
A: Sometime in the summer with an average start date of Aug 4.
The first reports, by year, posted on the message boards of Thanksgiving holiday sales are as follows:

2015: Jul 25**
2014: Aug 9
2013: Jun 18
2012: Jul 11
2011: Aug 8
2010: Aug 18
2009: Aug 11
2008: Jul 2
2007: Sep 22

**In 2015, on Sep 30 OW initiated a very brief 2nd round of discounted fares. It only lasted about 18 hours.

Q: How good are the Thanksgiving sales? What are some typical prices?
A: Many times the Thanksgiving airfare deals are the lowest TATL premium class fares offered the entire calendar year.

The lowest prices reported to the board each year are as follows:

Note: All prices from here on out are all-in round-trip/return prices in J unless otherwise noted.

Someone in the comments section on the onemileatatime.com post about this claimed that it was working again, but maybe they meant the link is still there and not that they can actually log-in and price. I don't have AARP so I'm unable to verify.

I saw some ~$1600 RDU-LON and am looking in January - found similar rates on ITA for Dec30-Jan11 which is a little too long - am doing more detailed searches now for my needs...

Just more evidence that the Thanksgiving sales aren't so special anymore. The past two years the periodic flash sales have provided much better value than the Thanksgiving deals.

I wonder what made the airline move away from "Thanksgiving sales" and towards "flash sales".

UA has matched sale fares to some cities in Europe for Thanksgiving week. Just booked HNL-AMS/CDG-HNL $2000 in first/business first. Sale seems to still be on but cities and flights vary.

Seems like this is the official thread for this - we should be close to seeing Thanksgiving fares for 2016 now right? I have a trip to visit my Mom in Florence over this holiday so just waiting to see when the sale might happen.

I booked mine about a month ago. Going to Morocco and Spain for about $2500. Bit on the high side for Spain, but definitely a good price for Morocco.

I don't think you have completely missed the boat yet, but if you see something under $2500 (or higher if palatable for your budget), you should probably book it.

I have a ~$1600 ticket SFO-VIE/BRU-SFO on KLM for early December, but at the same time I booked that there were Thanksgiving dates available for as low as $1500

Last year's BA sale from the West Coast to Europe (approx. $1500 J w/AARP+BA card) was in early September so...fingers crossed history repeats!

I'm watching for them every day! Some fares were released back in late July but they were for Thanksgiving + Christmas and were around $2500, which isn't anywhere in the ballpark of the previous sales.

Usually there are separate fares filed just for Thanksgiving and they are generally a lot lower than those offered for Christmas, so I'm hoping that some will be released. But if so, this will be on the late side of when they usually load them.

I just received an email from Swiss offering a "Winter Holiday Business Special" with departures ex US 19-25 Nov or 12-31 Dec. No real bargains though - ex LA rates to ZRH start at $3995 with very limited availability. Rates from NYC start at $3035 RT with more availability. Don't think I'll bite - especially when ST is offering an approx. $2600 RT from SFO/LAX right now which seems to have more availability. I like LX, but for a savings of approx $1400 each, I think DL, KL or AF might be in our future.

That is a case of wishful thinking on the part of LX (LH) - unless they are playing the game of dropping a hook in the water and waiting for suckers to bite. We here on FT are no suckers, are we?

That's the kind of deal I am waiting for. I was fortunate to get it last year.
