Thanksgiving premium fare discussion

This thread is to discuss the historically annual premium class fare sales that occur for travel (mostly TATL) during the US Thanksgiving holiday period.

FAQ

Q: When is Thanksgiving? What travel dates are covered in the Thanksgiving Day sales?
A: Thanksgiving in the United States is observed on the 4th Thursday of November.

The week of Thanksgiving and the weekend after are considered to be the busiest period for US domestic air travel due to large numbers of people traveling to spend the holiday with loved ones. As a result business travel demand, especially for international business travel, is unusually weak. This drop in demand is believed to be the origin for the Thanksgiving holiday international business class fares.

Typically these fares are offered for travel outbound from the US in the period from the Sunday before to the day after Thanksgiving. Return travel is usually valid for the day after Thanksgiving to the following Wednesday.

Q: When do the Thanksgiving fare sales start?
A: Sometime in the summer with an average start date of Aug 4.
The first reports, by year, posted on the message boards of Thanksgiving holiday sales are as follows:

2015: Jul 25**
2014: Aug 9
2013: Jun 18
2012: Jul 11
2011: Aug 8
2010: Aug 18
2009: Aug 11
2008: Jul 2
2007: Sep 22

**In 2015, on Sep 30 OW initiated a very brief 2nd round of discounted fares. It only lasted about 18 hours.

Q: How good are the Thanksgiving sales? What are some typical prices?
A: Many times the Thanksgiving airfare deals are the lowest TATL premium class fares offered the entire calendar year.

The lowest prices reported to the board each year are as follows:

Note: All prices from here on out are all-in round-trip/return prices in J unless otherwise noted.

Hi everyone- Just a reminder that, as the title suggests, this thread is to discuss "Thanksgiving premium fares."

Not sure how we got into posting economy fares for next May, but it naturally confused a lot of people.

Good news! NYC-LIS is now down to $1608 for Thanskgiving travel on OW.

This year practically all of the deals are to LIS and not sure exactly why.

These fares look to have been filed just this evening, though not sure what time zone the timestamp is in, Zulu or otherwise.

A couple of others:

CLT/DFW-LIS $1762
MIA-LIS $1903
STL/CLE/IAH/ATL/DTW/MSP/MEM-LIS $2063
PHX-LIS $2354

Other alliances have not followed suit yet, but presumably they will, at least from some of the departures.

Just very curious that the best AA deals are from AA hubs. Seems out-of-pattern.

If someone departs nonstop TATL, such as from a hub, they're not taking up a scarce seat on a domestic flight. Hence there's no issue of needing either a higher fare class for the whole ticket or needing to break the fare to use a low fare class on the international segments.

True, good point.

The fares to LIS seem to also work to FAO and OPO as well.

JFK>MUC/BER/FRA/STR/ZRH/MAD/BCN/SVQ are all around $1900.

The deal is also available with connections though.. see the thread in the premium fare subforum, where someone just ticketed:

Thank you. Just as I was saying. The deals will come in October, as in years past.

If there were deals last October, they didn't get reported here unfortunately. The discussion in this thread from that time period paints a different picture.

I know I checked a couple of times last October too and didn't find any better deals than what had been reported earlier.

I would also think there will be more or better deals as well this year. Because oil is down, and the world economy is much shakier.

Yep, it's gone. Back to $2100, which is still OK, but nothing to write home about.

DL did this too earlier and lowered the fares by $200 for about 48 hours.

Maybe they were hoping to force others to respond but they didn't.

Is the BA AARP discount working? The BA site has been showing me "We regret that the special discount offer is currently unavailable." for the last few days after clicking through the AARP verification link.
