1. Establishing college savings for the infant? 2. Health insurance for that infant? 3. Home alarm system to protect infant's bedroom? 4. Organic food for infant? 5. Dental insurance for infant? 6. Money for swim lessons for infant (to prevent drowning). 7. Adequate life insurance for parents (to care for child in case of parent death)? 8. Adequate long term care insurance for parents( to care for child in case of parent disability)? etc.

yeah, I think preventing a serious injury to a baby is worth all of those. You are probably the person who buys an old clunker for your kid to drive so that when he wrecks it, the car won't cost much.
I do agree with you that an infant seat on a plane is more important than: 1. Establishing college savings for the infant? - The cost of the odd plane ride is not going to impact the college fund. And if the kid is platinum level elite frequent flyer, clearly his parents can afford college if they can afford to fly that much. 3. Home alarm system to protect infant's bedroom? - If what is meant is a burglar alarm, I suspect that an infant has a higher chance of being injured as a lap sitter on a plane than be snatched Lindbergh-baby style from his nursery. However if what is meant is a fire/smoke/CO alarm, then this is a no brainer ... buy the alarms before buying a separate seat on the plane. 4. Organic food for infant? - Never have bought my kids organic food never will. I must be an evil father. 5. Dental insurance for infant? - For someone without teeth? While my infants did have dental insurance before I bought them their own seat on the plane, nonetheless, if I could not afford both, I'd forgo the teeth insurance. 6. Money for swim lessons for infant (to prevent drowning). - I didn't enroll my newborns into swim lessons. So I'm with jrhmdtraum on that.

Every parent has the duty to analyze risks and prioritize them relative to the resources they have to address them. Reasonable people can disagree on priorities. I however don't want the flight attendants' unions imposing its risk analysis on me. |
