You have no idea how many times a day I used to hear that. The TSO was giving a sarcastic response to your sarcastic statement. It goes both ways though, sometimes passengers literally beg you to take their items home.

TSO's are not allowed to keep any items left by passengers. Be it water, toothpaste, coins, jackets, shoes, or cell phones. Taking discarded items is grounds for termination.

You are obviously deeply disturbed by this incident and I can tell it is weighing on your mind. Next time just check it in or toss it out yourself.

It may not be "allowed" but there is nothing to stop a TSO from putting a "voluntarily surrendered" item in a pocket and taking it home. When a passenger notes an item is missing after exiting the checkpoint, a first concern would be that it was stolen by a TSO who was doing a secondary on carry-on baggage while out of sight of the passenger (which also is "not supposed to happen").

Screening of TSO's and other airport workers as they enter and leave the sterile area would avoid even the appearance of thievery. After all, if they have nothing to hide, they shouldn't worry.

........Most of time there is no barrel handy to put something.

that's not good. so where do all the ebil likkids 'n gels go?. if taken to a room to be disposed of, there is no proof that the item(s) in question have actually been disposed of. that ain't gonna happen with me either as if my items are confiscated, i want proof that they have been made inert, stable and safe which means i see it poured/squeezed out.

Always seems to be one handy to bend the passengers over though. :td:

Not that that stops screeners with sticky fingers ...

Hey if a $47k TV camera and a bunch of laptops can get stolen despite the threat, I doubt it'll deter lotion from being taken.

To avoid the appearance of corruption, TSA workers should not be keeping the things that are "surrendered".

Keeping other people's stuff goes a fair bit past the "appearance" of corruption.

Surely you regain an awareness of the insanity every time you travel  It still bewilders me that this board would jump all over a story that basically says "hey guess what, the same thing happened today that always happens, how about that!" Maybe we should all be dedicating the same effort to doing something about it :)

Well, it looks like this item has been picked up by that bastion of anti-TSA rhetoric, Allure Magazine.

Is the TSA Getting Gorgeous on Your Dime?

I don't believe it. If TSA personnel were doing that, they'd be more attractive.

Oh, please. As is ALL of TSA for some of us who won't FLY because of them. Just keep lining up and bending over, folks, if you think that's best.
