Anyone had issues with gel shoe inserts lately?
I know that at the beginning of the liquids/gels frenzy, people were getting gel shoe inserts taken away. I have shoes with Dr. Scholls inserts (the "gellin'" kind) and I would like to avoid getting these taken away. They make my shoes infinitely more comfortable, so I would kind of resent having to take them out because of the moronic TSA rules. They are technically not even real gels, they are just soft rubber, but of course they TSA is inconsistant in everything else, so I am sure I can't count on simple logic to apply here.
However, it does seem that some of the frenzy has died down a bit, so I am wondering if these are being allowed to pass through security. Has anyone had issues with this lately? Are shoe inserts still "evil and a significant terrorist threat"? |
Easy. If there is an issue, claim they are medically necessary. They can't refuse them at that point, although they may want to swab them.

But, are you "gellin'???"
Now, if they do take them away, it shouldn't really bother you much. 'Cuz up until that point you've been gellin' !!!:p

According to the Dr Scholls website, their Gel inserts are a TSA no-no.

I've had a pair in my shoes for roughly 2.5 years without a single question/re-run from TSA. The shoes alternate between being in my carry-on (on the way out) and on my feet (on the way back). Obviously anecdotal, so YMMV.

Our friend Dean from Huntsville wrote this on the blog some time ago, I believe in the myths thread:
Gel shoe inserts - Gel shoe inserts are not permitted, but shoes constructed with gel heels are allowed and must be removed and screened. This is another one that often gets maligned by the public, and rightfully so because of how it's worded. Specifically, they mean gel inserts for shoes. Like, it's a plastic bag in the shape of a foot that slides into your shoe, and if you squeeze it or fold it, you can literally see the gelatinous interior flowing around the bends and your fingers and stuff. Common sense, incoming: The common Dr. Shoal's (sic)™ stuff at Wal-Mart doesn't count, given that it's soft, molded plastic, and not an actual "gel." |
Well, maybe I can just stuff them in my bra to go through the checkpoint, since inserts (even water ones) are A-OK in bra, but not in a shoe...

a simple question...
why tell the tsa you have gel shoe inserts? ;) simply go thru the shoe carnival and see what happens. 5 hockey pucks says nothing will happen but if are concerned.... you can always put an old pair of inserts inside the shoes that "have to now go on the belt" and leave the good pair of inserts either inside a 2nd pair of shoes in your carry on or simply in the carry on by themselves if you are not caryying a second pair of shoes |
If you let them take them then it is an issue.
