Dead baby hidden in plane hand luggage
Papau, New Guinea police have arrested a woman attempting to carry a dead baby in her hand luggage on an internal flight. Police in PNG capital Port Moresby were called to the airport today when security discovered the dead baby in the woman's traditional string bag. The unnamed woman's husband fled the scene while police made the arrest, police sources said. The couple had wrapped the body of a dead baby in a cloth and was put inside the bilum (string bag) when boarding an Airlines PNG flight from Port Moresby to Lae. The woman did not have any documents that are required to transport a dead body on a plane. Authorities could not confirm whether the woman was related to the baby. Chief executive officer of PNG airports Clement Kapapal confirmed a dead baby had been discovered by security. Last week police arrested a PNG Highlands man for having a rocket launcher and nine grenades in his luggage when travelling on a flight to Mt Hagen police station. "Uh'm... bag check?" |
She probably reads this board and was afraid of TSA/baggage handlers stealing it.

I am wondering if they were taking the baby to "home" to bury it at the family cemetery.
Given the costs of transporting a corpse, this has probably happened before even in matters where suspicion about the circumstances of death would not arise. |
dead babies are not dangerous items relating to the safety of the aircraft and are not prohibited on the TSA webpage-no bag check-let it through, it is not the TSA's job to find dead babies !!!!! ;)

Gee I had no Idea... Having been to PNG I thought it was all the same...my gosh thanks so much kiddo. Serioous face:We are all aware the TSA is not in PNG. I have been to PM myself and can attest to that fact. But I am sure before the day is out some yahoo here will basically say Airport Security is not to look for dead babies. My question stems from this....
The woman did not have any documents that are required to transport a dead body on a plane. 2. How would anyone have the stones to ask for something like that? 3. Would you like to be sitting next to this person? 4. Would that dead body get miles? |

I'd say they are probably a much bigger danger than knives or guns, as they are don't require intent to cause harm (most knives or guns detected at checkpoints probably represent no actual threat). |
I think this falls under the "head in the bag" exception many of us have talked about.
If it was someone poor, I think it could be possible that the woman was taking it for burial. That would definitely deem more investigation in that case. As ralfp said, I think it is a health hazard to people on board and a likely way to spread disease. Super |
