Frozen Fish
 
We are visiting family in Denmark at Christmas. We caught halibut in Alaska this summer and want to take some fish back as a Christmas gift. Hence the issues. If the fish is frozen can it go in carry on bags through security? Are there US or EU or maybe Danish prohibitions on doing this? Thanks for any help.

FOOD comes under FDA regulations. Better start your research there.

Also besides EXPORTING FROM THE US -- what countries will you transit or if its a direct flight then you best check their country's IMPORT regulations.

Example,
A lot of American food CANNOT cross the border INTO Canada; Likewise a lot of CANADIAN Food items CANNOT come INTO the US...

At any rate, I wouldn't carry any kind of fish in my luggage -- Fish will thaw and STINK.

Ministry of Food say you can bring 1 kg of fish into Denmark from USA without a certificate. Only for private use.

So the fish would be legal but the ice to keep it cold wouldn't be. You could probably keep it on ice until getting to the airport then dump the ice out, take it through security and then refill on ice after security in the food court, but what a PITA.

What about packing it in dry ice? Isn't a certain amount of that allowed for perishables that are checked as luggage?

Dry ice would work great. I am told but need to confirm that a certain amount of dry ice is OK. By the way I packed 100 ponds of frozen halibut in two seperate suitcases and it made it from Elfin Cove Alaska (80 miles west of Juneau) via float plane to Juneau to PHX without thawing. Wrapped in newspapers 9 hours total. Any info re dry ice being permitted? You all are awesome what a great resource.

Dry ice rules depend on the carrier you are flying, but the general rule is that there is a limit on the total volume per person as well as in the cabin per flight so you have to notify the airline in advance that you will be carrying dry ice. You'll need to check with your specific carrier(s) for more details.
