Nightmare: When Will It End?

"Another factor is at play, too. Overnight, the 9/11 attacks turned travel from an adventure into a hardship, with intrusive security checks that passengers must endure if they want to board a plane."
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/17/bu...html?th&emc=th

Interesting quote from the New York Times article dated Sunday, August 17, 2008. Along with intrusive security checks are outrageous fees for items that once were free. When will it end?

Spiff Aug 17, 2008 2:04 pm

When Congress grows a spine and chucks this disgusting, un-American agency known as the TSA into the street and throws its incompetent "leaders" into prison.

LessO2 Aug 17, 2008 2:13 pm

That's misleading to quote one paragraph out of a story that is really about nickel-and-diming passengers.

Yeah, I'm sure that'll convince airlines to drop the bag fees. :p

I think of it like employers wanting to charging for benefits they were giving their employees free. Even if it starts small, once it's there, it'll never go away. I think the same thing will happen with these stupid fees. They won't go away. Not unless someone big starts touting it as an advantage and other airlines start losing business to them will others follow suit. If none of them do, well ...

When all the airlines have gone out of business. Don't hold your breath.

I have to say Spiff.. I do agree with you, no mistake there. Just wanted to share the thought I have when I read your regular comment the TSA. (I have to laugh, otherwise I'd pound my fist into my desk everytime and I like my hand and desk too much.)

You slip in disgusting, un-American agency known as TSA as often as Red Forman on That 70's Show slips in a zinger about his foot and someone's rear-end. And I laugh every time. :)

That may happen sooner than you think. If TSA continues to be a bunch of thugs, I give the airline industry less than five years. The point (actually the veiled threat) that anyone who complains about the extra fees may be handled by the TSA (read: put on the terrorist watch list) is well taken.

Yes, he does. But he is entirely accurate in his assessment.

The problem with giving too much petty authority to people in lowly paid jobs is it's going to be hell wresting it away from them again. I mean, what will airport employees do to stroke their egos once they can no longer demand that international guests remove their Laboutins and reveal every single item in their Louis Vuitton carryons?

They'll find other jobs that let them wield petty authority.

Meter maid, for example.

Too wimpy.

My solution can be summed up as "a noose on every tree, a gibbet from every lamp post pour l'encouragement des autres." Which is probably one of the reasons why I'm on the list.

oneofthosepeopleyouloveto hate Aug 17, 2008 7:35 pm

Yeah, that would probably do it! :D

There's no bread, let them eat cake
There's no end to what they'll take
Flaunt the fruits of noble birth
Wash the salt into the earth

But they're marching to Bastille Day
La guillotine will claim her bloody prize
Free the dungeons of the innocent
The king will kneel and let his kingdom rise

Bloodstained velvet, dirty lace
Naked fear on every face
See them bow their heads to die
As we would bow as they rode by

And we're marching to Bastille Day
La guillotine will claim her bloody prize
Sing, oh choirs of cacophony
The king has kneeled, to let his kingdom rise

Lessons taught but never learned
All around us anger burns
Guide the future by the past
Long ago the mould was cast

For they marched up to Bastille Day
La guillotine claimed her bloody prize
Hear the echoes of the centuries
Power isn't all that money buys

- Rush, Bastille Day

Americans are kinda fat to be marching anywhere, don't you think?

Most probably would prefer to watch the coverage of the revolution on CNN.

It's not just the TSA, spiff - it's the whole DHS.

Anecdote: Of course, this is hearsay. A friend of mine has a former roommate who is now a "regional head" or some such at the DHS. He tells me (and I believe him - he's not the sort to make things up) that his former roommate, after promotion to regional head, had to go to "torture camp" on a military base in Georgia. There were actual detainees there, about to be deported, and this guy had to learn to properly torture them. Evidently he puked while doing it one day and was later told by his instructor that he was a natural.

How's that for awful?

Spiff! :D Still the same I see.

Unfortunately, it will never change. Even if all the terrorists are wiped out. Once gooberment acquires power, it rarely gives it back. Kinda like hoping for the IRS to eliminate itself.

Well it depends, if you can partake in the revolution while waiting for your 1000 calorie coffee at Starbucks, in a mega-size SUV at the drive through window, then you will get a lot of American's to be part of it... otherwise, I think your CNN comment is bang on.
