Passport name change - what documents are returned?
I'm getting ready for a business trip overseas in November. I have my old passport from a trip in high school that is valid for renewal. However, I have been married since that time and will need to change my name.
The renewal application instructions are confusing regarding whether I can send in a copy of the certified document or must send in the real thing. I did call the passport line and the rep wasn't able to answer my question basically saying "send it in with a good photocopy and if it doesn't work they'll let you know." I was pondering trying that but the next day my trip was moved up by 2 months and I don't want any potential hassles. I guess what I really need to know is if I send in a certified copy of my marriage certificate if I'll get it back with my old voided passport. If I won't, I need to order one right away so I'll still have one for my files. I haven't been able to find anything on their website and I don't really want to call again. |
You'll get it back
You will get both, the cancelled passport and the marriage certificate back. Send certified copy of your marriage certificate.

Yep, send in the certified copy.
And yes, you get them both back. They punched some holes in my old passport, but not in my divorce decree. |
They send everything back to you. (Except your money!)
