WASHINGTON — Delta Air Lines is planning to become the first major U.S. carrier to offer its passengers the option of paying for speedier security lines.

Delta says it will start the Registered Traveler program this summer at terminals in New York's Kennedy and LaGuardia airports and in Los Angeles International Airport. Registered Traveler offers passengers who pay $128 a year can go through an exclusive line at airport checkpoints that is typically shorter than other security lines.

Until now the Registered Traveler program has only been available to travelers who sign up for the service through an airport or a few foreign airlines. Delta has hired Verified Identity Pass of New York City to enroll passengers in Registered Traveler and operate the lines at the three airports.

I hope that the airlines or programs such as clear that offer these 'expedited' services for an annual fee are paying for the TSA overtime out of their programs funding. I'm assuming that in order to be legal, they are using off-duty TSA personnel, and not pulling from the normal shift who are being paid (by all of us) for their services in the normal lines.

I assume that this is no different than CLEAR - users would simply get to bypass the ID check queue. While stupid and inane, I don't see how this will add to TSA costs.

Don't hold your breath on this one.

IMO, this is a revenue play for DL figuring why don't they get a piece of the CLEAR, etc options that are on the table right now.

That's my take of this too. Besides that, DL and NW's "security" people may be comparing notes while trying to be "stronger on security than the next guy" -- all they are really doing is missing the boat and making no one secure other than the small minority of people whom such things make financially more secure than they would otherwise be.

My take, too.

Gotta wonder.... if they think they can get more money from this by eliminating elite lines, will they?

TSA does not like the elite lines, they want "their" solution instead which is clear and now these stupid black diamond lines. They play games to get people into the regular lines than stay in the premium line (e.g. one checker at premium also doing wheelchairs going very slow versus 3 at a very small regular line).

The airport needs to pay the extra people to monitor who goes into the premium line so any cost saving they can get, they're interested in but not at the risk of p*ssing of the airlines or the frequent fliers. IMO, the lines have less than 2 years to live with the "solutions" TSA thinks they are offering.
