Simple. On the front of the form write "$350".

On the back write:

Clothes -- $300
Misc Gifts -- $50
Total -- $350

You don't have to list each item-- just each group or category.

How far can you go in grouping things? For the above, how about:

Things: $350

It may sound sarcastic, but I'm serious in a theoretical way. Once items are not individually listed, how can they be grouped?

Rather than "things" I use "small gifts" as a catch all for the last $100 worth of stuff...

There's no great way to describe it, just similar items.

When I see miscellaneous I take a look at the dollar amount to see if I need someone to break it down. $25 bucks - hardly worth my time. Every once in awhile I get someone who puts down misc - $700 (out of a total higher than the personal exemption), that's a red flag for me and I generally make them take it all out of their bags.
