oh, wow... that's new to me. I'll admit my information's a few years old, thanks for the new link. A few years back, in order to get a duplicate online without renewing, you had to do an address change.

OK I'll bite. What's a gumballer, and why would his license get confiscated by the police?

Gumball 3000, 3000ish mile road rally, of questionable legality. It goes from point A to point B, stopping through points F, K, L, Q, and Z along the way. Most of the driving is done at a high rate of speed, and since some jurisdictions will confiscate your license when (and if) you're pulled over, it's good to have a few spares hidden in your wallet..

The Gumball Rally was made in 1976
The Cannonball Run was made in 1981

This kind of stuff is still going on. You should check out this URL. I've not seen this movie yet.

Well, was it any of your personal info - or his own info?

Good question here. It was not my personal information, as far as I remember. All I had was my boarding pass, which he took. The boarding pass had only my name. The agent didn't ask for any other documentation at this point, and in fact at no point in the proceedings did they inquire for any other kind of ID.

Your experience was far better than my seat mate's on Friday evening out of BOS to ATL.

As we taxied out, my seat mate lamented he had had a long day. Me too, I said. Long day at work, flight late, rerouted through ATL instead of CVG so I wouldn't misconnect. You? I asked.

He started at home in Providence Friday morning. He was supposed to be on a morning flight to ATL for a wedding weekend, but his driver's license had expired on Wednesday. He was sent home to get alternate identification. From BOS to Providence and back, to get his passport. And then he got SSSS'd because of the reroute.

I told him to complain. Write your congressman. You can fly without ID. They should never have made you go home. He won't. He flies once or twice a year. TSA is keeping him safe.

And Vanishing Point in 1971. The definitive fast-driving movie.

Thank you for the recap. I took the advice here and ordered a replacement DL just in case.

Good find on the documentary.

I always thought that Death Race 2000 was the definitive fast-driving movie.

I keep my passport in my carryon

The wallet I've got currently does not have a little clear plastic flip-out thing, where you can show the license without taking it all the way out. I keep my passport in an outside pocket of my carry on bag. Most of the time its easier to pull out the passport than to take my license out of my wallet.

I do have a "spare" DL from when I had misplaced a wallet before and had to get another license made up. I *think" a state trooper would be able to tell that it was a "replaced" license by the earlier issue date, but I don't know how the TSA would ever know.

Good point on the trooper. When my replacement comes in, that goes in the wallet. The one I have now goes in my hiding place in my bag. You don't want to show your old license when you get pulled over. With the TSA, as long as it is not expired, your good to go.
