But still pussy-footing around: "you don't always need ID for domestic flights". You don't EVER need ID; and that's not just a semantic nuance.

Howdy, FlyerTalk. Please help me leverage my 15 minutes.

I was about to post the following to a new thread when I searched again and found this post, and so am chiming in here instead:

Several years ago, inspired by people like John Gilmore, Chris Soghoian, and Ben, I began exercising my right to travel within my own country without government monitoring by declining to identify myself at airport security checkpoints.

After noticing TSA signs at Kansas City International that falsely stated that presentation of photo identification was required of passengers, I filed a complaint with TSA. I received a response from TSA confirming that showing ID is optional. Soon thereafter, I was interviewed by a reporter and found myself on the cover of the Kansas City Star ("If truth be told, you don't need ID to board a jetliner", Scott Canon and Mike Rice, Kansas City Star, April 9, 2008).
[NOTE: The article is no longer available on the Star's Web site. See my July, 2008, update below for links to alternative sources.]

Imagine my surprise when upon reading this thread I found that a second paper -- one of the dailies here in Seattle -- finally picked up the story. I just about fell out of my chair. Unfortunately, after running down to the corner store to pick up a dead-tree edition, I found that the story seems to be Web-only for the Seattle Times.

So hello, FlyerTalk people. I'm new here. I don't fly more than a couple times a year, but when I do, I damned well want to do so without having to check in with my government first.

Does anyone have suggestions for drawing more attention to the issue now while I have a tiny bit of focus? I submitted a piece to the Kansas City Star today in hopes that they'll publish it as an op-ed. I e-mailed the Seattle Times' travel editor to ask about whether the story would be in print here and to let her know that I'm interested in talking to them if they'd like to write more on the topic.

Welcome to FlyerTalk, Phil! It's an honor to have you here. ^

As a journalist, you're someone who can really help to shed some light on what a ridiculous farce the TSA is and how much it harasses travelers in lieu of providing actual security.

Keep writing those articles. Visit www.papersplease.org , home of the Identity Project and product of our very own BillScan. Feel free to tap our collective knowledge for assistance in any way -you have access to people who've been traveling for millions of miles since the abomination known as the TSA came into being.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm definitely no journalist, though.

I, along with the general issue at hand, was the subject of that article. After I contacted the Identity Project about the letter I received from TSA, Bill put me in touch with the reporter from the Star. Nonetheless, as an amateur, I have the technical ability to write reasonably well when I put my mind to it, if not the political savvy to do so effectively.

Good for him!

The Kansas City Star removes stories from its public site after a while and makes them available only for fee.

That story was also run by the Seattle Times ("If truth be told, you don't always need ID for domestic flights" by Scott Canon and Mike Rice, April 14, 2008) and by the Arizona Daily Star ("You can fly without ID, but a hassle will accompany you" by Scott Canon and Mike Rice, April 20, 2008)
