TSA Provides Another Layer of Security to Airport Employee Hiring

"In order to properly vet employees hired to work in airports around the country, TSA authorizes the issuing of airport identification badges, including Secure Identification Display Area (SIDA) badges. The badges help prevent unauthorized individuals from entering the sterile and secure areas of the airport. The authorization is done in cooperation with the airport operators.

SIDA vetting is a critical security layer. On October 1, 2007, TSA began requiring airports to receive a favorable security threat assessment result for all employees prior to issuing airport badges.

Previously, the airport conducted a background investigation first, issued a badge and submitted new employee information to TSA, who then conducted a security threat assessment.

Today, when an employee is hired to work at the airport, the airport submits their background information to the Airport Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) Transportation Security Clearinghouse - who acts as a conduit for all airport employee background checks. AAAE sends the employee information to TSA. The employee then undergoes a TSA security threat assessment, and must be approved prior to a badge being issued.

The security threat assessment checks the person against the Terrorist Screening Database (TSDB) and determines whether there are any outstanding immigration, terrorist or federal open wants or warrants issues pending against the potential employee. This threat assessment generally takes 72 hours to process.

Simultaneously, the airport conducts a background investigation, checking fingerprints and the individual for any of 28 disqualifying crimes. If the airport background investigation returns without issue the employee will be granted a SIDA badge and the airport operator will determine which areas the employee will have access to the secure and sterile areas of the airport."
