"Average citizens" post mounting terror threat...
Report Details Terror Cell Threat
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: August 15, 2007 Filed at 2:22 p.m. ET NEW YORK (AP) -- Average citizens who quietly band together and adopt radical ways pose a mounting threat to American security that could exceed that of established terrorist groups like al-Qaida, a new police analysis has concluded. The New York Police Department report released Wednesday describes a process in which young men -- often legal immigrants from the Middle East who are frustrated with their lives in their adopted country -- adopt a philosophy that puts them on a path to violence. The report was intended to explain how people become radicalized rather than to lay out specific strategies for thwarting terror plots. It calls for more intelligence gathering, and argues that local law enforcement agencies are in the best position to monitor potential terrorists. ''Hopefully, the better we're informed about this process, the more likely we'll be to detect and disrupt it,'' Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said during a briefing with private security executives at police headquarters. The study is based on an analysis of a series of domestic plots thwarted since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, including those in Lackawanna, N.Y.; Portland, Ore.; and Virginia. It was prepared by senior analysts with the NYPD Intelligence Division who traveled to Hamburg, Madrid and other overseas spots to confer with authorities about similar cases. ... |
You don't need to work too hard to make Flyertalk participants fit this description of potential terrorist groups. Think about it!

OK, I see. The government p*sses off the citizens to the point where they band together and rebel. They will now be labeled 'terrorists' and restrictions will be tightened.
That puts us on a downward spiral.... but then again, it may have already started. |

Groups of people at work who moan about travel (car, rail, air, etc) and form car pool groups, and ways to "defeat" the BS at the airport. Groups of people who have had bad experiences with a store and no longer shop there -- economic terrorism. Groups of people who have had it with the BS a company does things and files lawsuits against those companies -- corporate "terrorism". How far will the gov't go before it decides that all of the people are terrorists in waiting? |
"Cells" don't concern me
I'd be more concerned about one or two people of some means and intelligence who feel disenfranchised, a la McVeigh and Nichols, setting off an explosive device at a large gathering of people, i.e,. an airport check-in line than I am concerned about terror "cells".

The autthorities should be more concerned about everyday crimes like rape, child molestation, domestic violence, muggings, burglaries, etc - you know things that occur thousands of times each and every day of each and every year. How many so called terrorists attacks has America experienced? How much of this country's current and mortgaged resources are being used to pay to protect single one off attacks that might be spectacular but that really are uncommon? There needs to be some perspective here.

I hate myself for saying this, but the problem really lies with the American people. Until they loudly declare to their representatives that they aren't completely consumed with fears of terrorism, the government is simply doing what it thinks the people want. The downside is that the government is only too happy to focus on the "grave threats", since people in fear are easy to control, and will give up rights for "security".
As long as we have people in Iowa (figuratively speaking) shaking with fear over Islamic terrorism, nothing is going to change, and it will only get worse. We also have to stop rewarding politicians for fear-mongering. As has been said many times, when we give in to our fears, "they" have won. The other problem is the media, which sensationalizes every "terrorist plot" yet strangely stops reporting once the "plot" has been de-bunked. A case in point is the ridiculous "blow up JFK" plot. It was all we saw on the national news, until rational people pointed out that the crazy dreams of a few crackpots had no chance of success. Somehow, I never saw those reports in the headlines or on the news crawlers. I don't know how we get out of this spiral. Sooner or later, someone is going to do something bad on our soil, and then things will only get worse. |
