NTSB: Delta plane touched down before taking off again in near collision

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19856220/

Another scary one. First pass at this made me want to jump out and smack the UA pilots on the head with last month's french bread but then again, even if they missed it, how much farther did they have to travel before getting to the next taxiway?

UA allows passengers to listen in on their radio chatter. Wonder if any passengers were listening in......

Interesting bit.

I was tuned into Channel 9 during a recent approach to IAD where Capt. Panic felt the need to touch-n-go due to wx. I really do love Channel 9, but it's a wonder that UA still allows it in this day and age of Abundant Caution™.

Not enough information in the article. I would need the taxiway diagram (easy to get) and information on where the UA plane was. But, he should have stopped when the tower told him to. However, the tower tapes would be the best source of information, not an msnbc article.

msnbc quotes the FAA as saying that the UA plane missed the turn.

They missed a left turn and crossed the runway they were supposed to be taxiing to the end of as the DL plane was touching down.

Here is the diagram.

UA was cleared to taxi to rwy 9L. It was taxiing on twy D, and supposed to make a left turn onto twy B. UA flight missed the turn on B and crossed onto rwy 9L where the DL plane had just touched down its main landing gear
