The Bin cleaning thread
 

I wanted to share my experience on my last flight through DFW.

I generally don't throw my shoes into the bins, but instead kick them directly onto the conveyer belt.

The TSA barker was in the process of throwing me a second bin for my shoes which I politely declined.

He asked why I just threw them on directly to which I asked, "To prevent the crap on my shoes to go onto the next person's jacket. When was the last time you had these bins cleaned"

To my disgust he thought about it for a min, then replied, "never in my 3 years at DFW, we just throw them away when they get really, really nasty or sticky"

Bleh.

On your next flight please ask the TSA when was the last time the bins were washed/cleaned.

Probably why BAA doesn't have you put your shoes in the bin....it's the only sensible thing BAA does.

The small, nominally white circular bins that some people use for keys, wallet, cell phones, change, etc. are just as gross as the gray bins. If TSA were a private business, it would be shut down for public health violations. :td:

How often is the conveyor belt cleaned? The only way to deal with the shoe issue is to have shoe only bins.

The only way to really deal with the shoe issue is to abolish the shoe carnival.

In principle I agree with you, though I still think there is some value in keeping long edged tools out of the cabin. Thus I support shoes that trigger the magnetometer having to go through X-ray as they did before 9/11.

I could probably be talked out of that position :)

When will the TSA "brain trust" realize that the filthy bins are good vectors for terrorists to get lethal germs out and into the airports?

Cleaning bins? That's beneath TSA employees. They're super-sophisticated front-line terrorist fighters.

As in tooth paste stopping... water banning... fighting machines :p

Personally I assume the soles of my shoes can look after themselves.

Not all luggage or clothing goes in the bins. @:-)

True. On the other hand I really have never seen a bin so obviously dirty that I've had issues throwing my stuff into it. However having travelled for over a decade on London public transport I've come to accept a little filth with my journeys.
