A Vanishing Breed

Is it just me, or has the presence of FAM's declined over the past 6 months?

They seem to becoming as rare as a pre-flight drink.

A vanishing breed, what?

I don't have any evidence to back this up, but the person I know who WAS an air marshall left because of the terribly crappy schedule and hours. As with many things involving the government, he was told the job would be this, and it ended-up being entirely different.

I had read somewhere that the TSA/DHS was having trouble hiring and also retaining FAM's.

Better asked in Travel Safety and Security. Personally, I don't pay attention to the FAMs anymore.
