Victim of computer theft at Newark
My daughter's laptop was stolen from her suitcase at Newark and it had to have been taken by either the TSA or a Continental employee. Continental refuses to take any responsibility. I'm worried for two reasons: first, there is the question of getting compensation--where do I turn? Second, this is a huge breach in security--if the thief could take the computer out unhindered, then he could have put something in unhindered as well. Again--who do I turn to? Obviously I don't trust the TSA.

Secondly, Never *ever* put a laptop (or anything of value) in checked luggage. You could try to file a claim with the TSA, but I wouldn't hold my breath. It's a disgusting agency alright! |
Oh no it seems this very trusting Breed of Passengers just never seems to die out!!

The airline absolutely will not pay for this. Try your homeowner's insurance if you can take the risk of making a claim.

thanks--will try

I'm sorry for the loss of the laptop, but as others posted, it cannot be emphasize enough to only pack in your checked baggage what you're not afraid to lose or have broken. Anything of value should always be carried with you and this includes medication.
For example, during the UK "no carry-on" hysteria late last year, I refused to fly there because no one would take responsibility for my electronic goods. It's just not worth losing something that is worth more than the cost of your ticket or contains information/data which is invaluable. Besides the homeowners policy, check your credit card - they may offer buyers insurance that would cover the loss. One word about homeowners insurance - don't make a claim if your policy is for a home in a high risk area like Florida. Just filing such a claim could result in your policy being dropped or a staggering increase in premiums - which is obviously not worth the cost of just buying a new laptop. |

Well, I said 'risk' making a claim. We can't risk doing so in Texas even though we are hundreds of miles from hurricane damage. Entirely too easy to get canceled or have your rates go up and up.
