Tampering with the lav smoke detector is. The theory being that you would have to do that to get away with smoking.

Its criminal if done in the airplane.

I did a YYC-LAX flight last year and noticed the faint smell of cig smoke in the back lav. Oddily enough it didn't concern me or seem complete wrong, although I do remember the AC DC9 accident in the 80s.

When we landed in LAX the FA asked everyone to sit while the police escort someone off the plane. A guy in 14F got the personal greeting and the right to be first pax off the plane.

I'm not so sure it is.

I've been on a number of flights to/from Asia where people have been smoking. I' ve noticed no reaction from the flight crew.

It is a very large fine for smoking on a plane.

General Rule: The federal government prohibits smoking on all U.S. airline flights
arriving in or departing from the United States . 49 U.S.C.A. § 41706 (a) (2005).
Enforcement Agency: The Federal Aviation Administration enforces the smoking
restriction on airline flights.
Penalties: Civil fines for smoking on an airline flight range from $2,200 for smoking
in an airplane seat or cabin to $3,300 for smoking in an airplane lavatory. Tampering
with a smoke detector installed in an airplane lavatory is punishable by a $2,200
fine. 14 C.F.R. § 121.317(g), (h), (i) (2005); 49 U.S.C.A. § 46301 (2005).

I agree about the rules and fines.

But words like criminal, arrested, and the slammer were used.

You'd think they were talking about lighting thier shoes. Now that's serious business :P

You do get arrested, ask Steve O from the Jackass gang. Depending on the situation you can be put in a holding cell. Which is being arrested, AFAIK.
While I am not a lawyer or play one on TV these things I have seen happen.
If I smoked I would wait the couple hours to have one. It would be an expensive puff.
I would imagine some of your fellow passengers might think you are trying to pull a Richard Reed and put an ... whooping on you.
Just my humble opinion

Or as in the case of the FA admonish Reid by reminding him it is a no smoking flight and ignore the fact he is trying to blow everyone to pieces. I guess she was from CA
