Customs at JFK

We will be arriving in the US at JFK on a Delta Flight. Will we have to pick up our checked baggage when going through customs? Even though we have a connecting flight in a couple of hours.

Yes, all pax transiting to/through the US have to pick up and re-check baggage at their port of entry into the U.S.

At least you go through customs at JFK! I would almost rather take a connecting flight and go through JFK customs, instead of ATL customs; my wife actually did this, although she went BRU-ORD-ATL instead of BRU-ATL, just to avoid ATL customs.

Yes, you have to clear immigration and customs at the first point of entry in the
country (US)

Additional notes:

You have to go through this even if you are connecting in US for a flight
into another country.

There is no such thing as International Transit area/lounge in US.

What is wrong with ATL customs? I don't fly Delta, so I'll probably never deal with them, but what is the deal?

Global_Hi_Flyer Dec 12, 2006 8:33 pm

I, too, prefer JFK customs and immigration to ATL. They move folks more efficiently at JFK and seem to have more common sense. It took over 45 minutes to clear the lines at Immigration (US Citizen) at ATL on more than one occasion, never waited that long at JFK.

Admittidly, the security re-screening at JFK (Delta terminal) can be a real zoo compared to ATL, but only due to lack of space.

Unless you are coming from Ireland, Bermuda, or most places in Canada ...

Once you clear customs, you will exit the customs area and you should be able to drop your bags off at a Delta counter right outside the baggage claim area.
You will probably have to pass back thru TSA screening, but at least you won't have to carry your bags all over the terminal.

It has been awhile since I connected thru JFK on DL, but this isusually the routine in connecting to another flight after clearing customs.
