Liquid ban in Narita

I noticed security screeners on the jetway checking everyone's bags prior to boarding. One guy had a water bottle and they made him throw it away. So, although you can now carry liquids on board in the US (if purchased post security), you cannot do so in Japan. Just an fyi for anyone traveling a US carrier in Japan.

Baka. :td:

At least for an ANA flight from NRT to IAD last week, there was no extra gate check.

lianluo Nov 17, 2006 10:49 pm

Yeah, it appears to apply only to US carriers from what I saw. I stopped into Duty Free to buy something liquid and asked an employee if I could take it on the plane. Once he determined it was a US carrier, he said I would not be allowed to. If you are on ANA, the duty free will deliver to your plane.

now thats makes no sense...

Not just the jetways, last month when I was in Terminal 2, they closed the escalators to Delta/Continetal gates and set up booths in the hallway to check carryons for liquids. At the gates, the vending machines did not work. So I went to the nearby giftshop to buy some juice. After taking my money, the cashier actually uncapped the bottle of juice and poured it all into a transparent plastic cup and asked me to drink it inside the store, with repeated Japanese apologies of course.

Talking about taking things to the extreme.

Ridiculous. Why don't the US airlines start an advertising campaign where they are honest and say "we really don't want you to fly."

more reasons to pick foreign airlines... now do you think this is the doing of
US government, or the japanese to steer the passengers towards their airline?

I don't think it is the Japanese who initiated it. It doesn't apply to non-US airlines. Since it applies to all US airlines out of NRT, independently if they are flying to the US or just intra-Asia, my guess is that the ground managers of the US airlines (probably Japanese nationals themselves) got together and agreed to do this. Classic case of the Japanese going overboard without any context.

More reason to stop visiting Japan at all until the bakayaros responsible for all this baka are dishonorably fired :td:

Well Spiff, you'll have to extend your boycott to Korea as well. I just had my lip gloss and mini hair spray confiscated prior to boarding UAL 884 at Incheon. Everyone was checked. I'm just glad she missed my brand new 1 oz bottle of perfume! I asked why and was told "no liquid" There was no sense in arguing, as she would not have understood me. So the rules we are used to in the states don't apply in Japan/Korea. I'm hiding my perfume before I board my flight to HNL....

I did NRT-SFO this morning. They had about 10 people on the jetway checking PAX's bags for liquids. Silly if you ask me i.e. Kabuki.... This was on UA.

htb Nov 19, 2006 12:11 am

Would anyone affected please try to contact UA about this? It sounds like someone went overboard without context... I'm quite concerned because I'm planning UA trips in the not-to-far future and wonder if I should switch...

HTB.

If it was the latter, I'm pretty sure it would apply to ALL non-japanese airlines...
