Ads in Bins?!
 

I totally forgot about this from a couple weeks ago... but when I flew out of LAX T4, they had new bins complete with FREAKIN' ADVERTISEMENTS!

I'm betting some company offered the bins (complete with trolleys for the screeners) to the airport for free, and in exchange they get to sell ads exposed to a captive audience.

Didn't work though.. I don't know what they were selling. Just something orange.

Is this happening anywhere else?

Maybe if the TSA gets the bins for free or can sell advertising on them, they will shut up about raising the "9/11 fee" on our tickets!

I'd like to put ads for AirServ or Wackenhut on there.

Bring your favorite stickers to plaster over the ads.

I saw that (ads in bins) about 6 months ago in TYS. It took every fiber of my being to resist strangling the TSA supervisor. It's not enough to have to go through the asinine security measures...I've got to be exposed to ads while doing it.

I hate to be a party-pooper, but the first thought popping into my head is a government ethics violation for a conflict of interest. What you have here is an actual or perceived government endorsement of a commercial product or service. If these only appeared at airports with contractor-manned checkpoints, that's probably OK. But, if I were an FSD (Believe me - I have no career aspirations in that direction!) and there were govvies at my checkpoint, I would lose the bins with ads. The perception of a COI is just too close for my comfort level.



Someone who has seen these bins might consider dropping an email to the DHS IG and stir the pot a little. Make sure you ID the airport so the FSD can get a call from the IG. I'd do it myself if I had actually seen these bins myself. If you get blown off by the IG, raise the ante with the Office of Government Ethics or with your Congress members.

Is it really so bad? If our government could shift from being tax-supported to being advertising-supported, I wouldn't complain. Most of the stuff we use on the Internet (including the site you're using this very moment) is ad-supported...

... I would definitely try to get a billboard atop the Capitol dome. Easily visible from the Mall, y'know. :p ;) :D

I'm surprised those f-ing plane crash lawyers haven't yet supplied bins to the LEX TSA.

Strangling the TSA supervisor... Now how in the hell did he become responsible for the ads in the bins?
