Shoes without metal?
 

I'm looking for a new pair of walking shoes that could also be used with a pair of slacks as casual business wear (i.e. doesn't have to go with a suit). I'm looking for a pair that won't set off the WTMD and doesn't have a thick sole. So far the Ecco website isn't turning up a lot of information. Any other brands I should consider looking at?

I tend to bring just one pair of shoes so it has to be good for extended walking in a city/light trail hiking but should also be wearable for business casual and into a nice restaurant.

I dont know where you can find shoes w/no metal...but my when I need to buy shoes for work, heres my trick I try to bend them near the heels if they are bendable they dont have any shanks if you cant then you know they are...

That's a pretty good idea. I hadn't thought of that.

My typical response was putting my shoes in the WTMD at the last government building I worked. :D

Rockport used to make all of thier shoes with a steel shank until a couple years ago. They began making all shoes with a "fiberlon" shank which is made of hardened nylon and plastic. I wear these at work at the checkpoint all day and they are very comfortable. Can be a little pricey, but worth it. Another brand is Deer Stags which are found at JC Penney for about $50. I know a few of the other TSA guys and some pilots that like these ones alot.

Those might not have metal, but a lot of those appear to have soles > 1" thickness. So especially at shoe carnival airports, they might try to make you take them off.
