Will they shoot it down?

I just saw the news that the White House and the Capitol building are evacuated because of an unidentified aircraft in the DC air space. We had a discussion here a while ago that if this ever happened the air craft would a) immediately be shot down, or b) nothing would happen more than the aircraft be escorted. Let's see what happens.

It can of course not be a false alarm

I heard it was a Cessna.

What fools. We have become a nation of idiots.

That was quick

Things happen fast on the security front in DC. During the time it took me to post the first post and go back to Yahoo, they had cut the news article and no mention of the unidentified aircraft remained. CNN reports the "danger" is over and an "all clear" was issued after a few minutes.

But we can't be too careful, can we

f-16s

I saw the f-16s overhead... thought they were drilling or practicing... ran past the VPs motorcade this morning at Calvert and Connecticut... a full motorcade of motorcycles, SUVS and bruhaha... the regular waste of tax payer money here in DCLand...

ALL CLEAR

repeat

ALL CLEAR!

"A high wing cessna"

CNN is quoting the FAA as saying this was a high wing cessna, presumably the kind that crashed into the white house a few years back and succeeded in SCRATCHING THE PAINT ON THE BUILDING and BREAKING A SHRUB.

Perhaps if the pilot had taken off his shoes before taking off...

Don't forget the 26 gal of gas - that could start a small fire.

Wasn't it a similar plane that the deranged kid flew into the Tampa office building a few years ago?

And we're only a few months away from the summer dry season

I wonder if the FTers who advocate the immediate murder of anyone who gets uppity on a plane by the other pax, regardless of whether that person is a threat to the aircraft or not, are going to rush in and say that this plane should have been immediately shot down.

What's the cargo capacity of a cessna? 2000 or 3000 lbs? If you fill a cessna with a ton of explosives will it do more than scratch paint?

Depends on the Cessna in question, a commonly available Cessna 172, full of fuel, < 1000lbs of "cargo" which includes the pilot. Still would do little more than scratch the paint.

Not exactly. Probably closer to 120 pounds, depending on how fat the terrorist pilot.

Washington, D.C. CITY OF FOOLS

That's right! A teenage boy, whose last name the media reported as
Bishop, (his actual surname was Bishara....his father was Syrian)
was a fan of Bin Laden and he flew his "little" plane into an office
tower in Tampa at night, killing himself and breaking window's at
an attorney's office. Another September 11th? Hardly.

This morning's events in Washington were a national
embarassment. Even if a Cessna 150 were to hit the
Capitol Building or The White House, a broken window and
some chipped paint would be the extent of the "damage."
For the politicians and Secret Service to run around in a
panic like silly little girls is beyond absurd. We're not
talking about a hijacked 747 here! A Cessna 150 has
neither the kinetic energy nor the fuel load to do damage.

Look to the history books if you want to see bravery
and courage.....the Blitz during World War II, when London
was under heavy bombardment and the British people
pressed forward with courage and fortitude.

I took lessons in a Cessna 150 when I attended an
aviation summer camp as a kid......it's a flying beer can!

But, but, but . . . September 11 CHANGED EVERYTHING, didn't it?

It certainly made being cowardly, as a nation, very fashionable.

The embarassment here is the media and their "reporting" of the story, not the response of the USSS (Secret Service). USSS has a job to do, and they do it very, very well. Appropriate protocols were enacted and the principals were all protected. As an unusally insightful talking head commented, this could have easily beee a distraction to a ground assault. I feel the response was appropriate, especially in light of the foiled mid-nineties plot to fly a general aviation craft (packed with explosives) into CIA HQ. In today's incident, I doubt very much anyone had time to analyze the size/cargo capacity of the aircraft. Armchair quarterbacking is easy - and fine - just try to remember what is at stake and that these people have to act in the moment.

Secondly, and I cannot emphasize this enough, any idiot flying into that airspace is so goddamn stupid that shooting him or her down would surely improve the gene pool.

Update: It was a C-150

This was a Cessna model 150. It is a two seater. It barely flies 120 MPH. It is SO slow that an F-16 cannot pace it, because the F-16 would staff before it got that slow. They could only literally fly circles around it. It weighs, fully loaded at maximum capacity, 1600 pounds. Its registration was N5826G. It was based at a flying club in Lancaster, PA and was forced to land in Frederick, MD. If you filled up the tanks to their not one more drop capacity, you would have only put in 26 gallons of gasoline.

It is very clear to this pilot, at least, that if the pilot fling this airplane had taken off his shoes for a security inspection, NONE of this would have happened!
