TSA? Am I qualified?
 

I am very interested in a postition wiht TSA. I am in the process of applying and am scheduled for my computer examination, but am very nervous about my qualifications. Any input?


I have a Bachelors Degree and have been a Middle School /Math/Science and Social Studies Teacher for 13 years in Private and public schools.

I have additional Certification in Travel and Tourism.

I am a female in my early 40's I live 10 minutes from a Major Airport and have no children. I can work any shift.

So what do you think?

Good grief! Why would someone with your qualifications want to work for the TSA? Can't you find a better job than that?

I think you should go to a web site like http://tsa-screeners.com where you may be steered in a better direction then the TSA bashers could give you.

No offense to you, Bruce, but I expected that kind of response from this forum.
I have seen many people that started with TSA as a screener that had high credentials move quickly up the ranks and are now part of the FSD staff. I've seen screeners become scheduling officers in under a month as well as HR, admin officers, and even assistant FSDs. A teacher with that much experience could possibly become the next training officer for that airport. You never know, with someone fresh in the department can bring new and better ideas into the agency.
Although the TSA is not in your best interest, it is still a decent place to work. Provided you are put in an ideal environment, (i.e. good supervisors and management...yes, there are still some out there...)working for TSA can be great.

Got any suggestions.....I am trained to be a TEACHER...BUT....

I am fed up with school violence, cutting of funds...parents who refuse to take any responsibility for their children, the dumbing down of the test, no child left behind except the bright children are beng left behind....

I have always wanted to work at an Airport. In my younger years I trained to be a flight attendant...my husband is a Military officer.....I just want a nice job close to home....If TSA does not hire me I might just go to HERTZ or AVIS!

If, in fact, you are a teacher, surely you can find more satisfying work than being a TSA agent working the overnight shift.

Thank you. You are more than qualified for a position here. As long as you do not have any disqualifying criminal offenses and you have no major financial difficulties, you should be fine getting in.
As a pointer, you may want to go to www.opm.gov and download SF form 85-P. It's the application for Public Trust Position. I cannot remember if the form is still required, but it was at the time I entered. It is quite lengthy so you may want to start early.

Out of curiosity, which airport are you interested in?
(if you don't want potential backlash from our frequent flyers, you can PM that answer. Some folks here are really ticked at some airports, if not all of them.)

Does TSA prefer/require prior law-enforcement, security (rent-a-cop), military, or such experience in new hires?

In fairness, there are a lot of TSA employees who are frustrated with their jobs. Turnover is rather high, and they've been placed in an rather antagonistic position in relation to the flying public. On the other hand, Hertz looks like a much better place to work, judging by how pleasant their employees are. I'm sure that there are people who become angry with Hertz employees, but I don't see it with the frequency that I see it with the TSA.

Seriouslly, if you have taught Social Studies in the past and believe what you taught in regards to US History and Civil Rights, you may have a tough moral dilemma in working for TSA.

I have my doubts whether your post and feelings are genuine, but I will indulge.

If you want to work in a position that you have NO say in what to do and how to do it, then the TSA is for you. It is very black and white, either to comply with the order from the local FSD, or they can dismiss you right there.

Then, there's the flying public. 80% of an individual airline's revenue come from 20% of its flyers. That means you get a boatload of frequent fliers. Many of these frequent fliers (including myself) are used to passenger-friendly experiences with the TSA. When we see inconsistencies, we point them out. Some do it verbally, and some get complaint cards. Some do both.

About the working environment, read <a href="http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=380052">this string</a> and see how a TSA employee feels, and how sympathetic we are.

If you do a search, there have been other strings of TSA employee dissatisfaction and high turnover. At my "home" airport, Denver, they are resorting to hauling TSA folks from Colorado Springs for overtime and are consolidating screening lanes to use fewer staff (and slower lines).

I know teaching is difficult nowadays, but I would seriously consider the Hertz or Avis option you mentioned.

I am not sure why you think I am not genuine....and all your replies are of the nature they need editing by the moderator........but I can guess...I have looked at your posting history and you are NOT a great supporter of TSA

I'm so sorry to hear that a fellow educator would consider working for an agency as morally bankrupt and civil liberties-challenged as the TSA.

I presume you taught your students Civics when you taught social studies. You can pretty much scotch everything you've taught them. And math? Probability theory is ignored by the imbeciles in charge of the TSA.

I hope you'll reconsider and put your talents to use in another profession or go back to education.
