How about at DFW where TSA takes your BP and writes info from it whenever they decide to search your carryon?

There are instances where you have to relinquish the BP.

Yep, like when your a selectee we have to mark your boarding pass so the airlines know you've been checked. If you don't have that mark back to the screening process you go.

They do it at EWR. The agent said they were just keeping track of names, flight numbers, and boarding times, if "something should happen".. I was told they also use it to track late selectees so they can't blame the TSA if they arrived late during a civil conversation earlier this year.

Who knows what else they use it for and where it goes -- but that is more or less what is on your BP (name, flight, departure time).

You should make sure to note clearly your airport arrival time (actually, time of arrival in screening line is better) in your complaint--as you found out at SEA, TSA will try to blame the pax for not being "early enough." If you were there 1.5-2 hours early, that line of defense goes away.

Personally I think the "1.5-2 hours early" advice needs to be droppped for airports where it is clearly stupid. It's like crying wolf and loses its effectiveness. There's no way I'd ever show up > 1 hour early (no checked bags, automatic checkin) unless I had specific reason to believe it was needed, and because they say "1.5-2" for just about every airport, that information loses its validity.

Not wishing to get into semantics, but that's not what I meant by surrender or take away. The BP does not need to be removed from the passenger's immediate vicinity, nor does it need to be out of his/her sight at any time (as in the case of the OP).
