Question for other Screeners

Since the 2nd chance rule started at the walkthru, things have gotten a lot better. Not as many wandings and a lot more happy passengers.

But over the last two or so weeks, the leads and supervisors at my airport have started to tell us to do random wandings again. Because they always want to see a body in the screening area.

Are you all having to do the same thing?

Continuous screening. It's SOP

You know what, this isn't a conversation I need to have with you on this board.

But I will make it known that I feel a AVO needs to be put out to change the "Continuous screening" policy, with this new 2nd chance policy being presented.

Again all TSA has done, has given a false idea to passengers. Just because you get a second chance doesn't mean you won't be pulled for screening to the back.(I completely disagree with this btw)

Oh yeah our management has been on us about continuous screening since the holiday crowds have gone, funny how that works huh? 2nd chance doesn't make any sense if your still doing continuous wanding. Some of the looks we get when a passenger alarms goes out and takes off the offending item and then is still put in the pen for continuous.

Hang on, the SOPs are finally being revised and should be out soon. To bad management does not use this second chance as an opportunity to do some TRAINING on those that are not busy. God forbid that happening. Even better yet, managers conduct some training.T hey are suppose to be the ultimate stuff when it comes to screening are they not?

When you think about it, it is far worse. Here are the options.

If the metal detector is sufficient, then the secondary search is just a PR move. Pretty much unconscionable.

If the metal detector isn't sufficient, and you can really find something in secondary, then all a terrorist has to do is attempt to go through security when then there is more of a crowd. It decreases his chances of search.

Someone whined on the thread about the large conference crowd that security couldn't possibly adjust the way that it searches to make the crowd pass faster, that would give a lower level of security during rushes. Well, if they aren't playing the PR game, then it seems that is exactly what they are doing with the rules above.

SO!!!!!!!!!

Are we to pick and choose what is SOP and what is not ?

Are you telling me that @ "your" airport you (as a group) are following SOP to the letter ?

It is so comforting to know that we are being harrased and demeaned not because we pose a threat to our fellow travellers, but to keep screeners looking productive and their bosses happy.

Another step down the slippery slope from at well intentioned foolishness into mindless bureaucracy.

No suprise.

LOL! I wish the TSA followed the SOP, at least that would deliver some measure of consistency to the flying public.

HugeAss.....you know, as well as I do, that will NEVER happen.

tsadude Jan 16, 2004 9:46 am

It hasn't happened and never will. That would force some white collars to work.

Yes we are. We just had a series of A@#$ chewings for not following the SOP right down to the letter, so now we are doing continous screening, both wanding and etd to the letter of the SOP, on threat of disciplinary action. They have the local ASIs out watching us on the cctv and sneaking into the sterile area to make sure its being done the way the SOP says it should be done.

HugeAss Jan 16, 2004 12:08 pm

I've seen this before, and if your experience is similar to mine, you will have several screeners struggling with directive. Why? Because management discourages the study of the SOP and orders the screeners, for various reasons, not to screen in accordance with the SOP. I've seen a lot of people in TSA management, all models of probity (NOT), who can't be bothered to learn the SOP.
