About Last name and First name in Flight Ticket

Recently I have booked an international flight ticket to USA and in that I have mentioned my Surname in First Name column and given name in Last name column and after booking I realised that they need to be in the reverse order will I face any problem at the boarding? Please let me know I talked with the airlines and they are asking me to cancel and I am worried now.

When your passport is scanned, or looked up through backend systems, it will not match the name on your ticket so it will likely raise red flags. Have you talked to the airline folks and tried to change the name? Sometimes they are willing to fix things in case of honest mistakes like this. If they are not willing to do that and are instead telling you to cancel, you should probably take their advice.

talk to the airline and tell them you reversed your name. This is an easy fix.

Right now name won’t match passport which will cause extra hastle.

Call the airline and ask another service agent to try again. If after two times they will not do it over the phone, go in-person to an actual brick/mortar ticket office (or the airport) of the airline with your passport and government issued ID and ask them to fix it.

What’s the route and airline involved?

You can try your luck with getting the airline agents to check you in and fix the situation at the airport anyway, if not willing to cancel the ticket and pay for a new one at whatever is the currently prevailing price. But then you’re sort of at the mercy of the involved airline agents and any airline security contractors involved on the trip. Often they may not even do a fix and it works fine to travel anyway.

Technically, an airline should be able to check you in and forward the proper APIS info anyway even when there is a name order swap on the ticketed booking for international trips to the US. I’ve seen most of the EU and US airlines fly people from India to the US with name order swaps and do so without major issue — beside any issues related to getting the frequent flyer program credits and/or FFP elite status benefits to work. Actually, the biggest issue on the international trip to the US airports of entry that I’ve seen when my travel party members have had ticketed name in reverse order to passport names per the MRZ has been the frequent flyer program aspect.

Name and Surname in inverted order

Hi everyone, I realized the name on my booking are in the opposite order and i can look for my booking by putting my first instead of family name. It's an award flight booked on another airline so neither of the two companies involved can do anything.

My only option, according to them, is to cancel and re-book. Unfortunately there is no availabiliy anymore for awards and i dont want to miss the flight cause my gf is on it.

I have been reading a lot about this not really being an issue but the customer service got me a bit scared and worried. Should i just try my luck?

Company is Finnair and i am leaving from BOM to MXP

Can’t speak for BOM-HEL-MXP in particular, but for DEL-HEL-various other Schengen airports (and also for DEL-HEL-US) on AY, in India I have repeatedly seen AY check in and allow travel to US passport-using and Indian passport-using travelers to fly when the ticketed name order is opposite of that which may be suggested by passport swipes. In such cases, the check-in at the airport will have to be done by check-in staff pulling up the PNR by typing in the record locator and/or the last name as on the ticket instead of as per a passport swipe.

Will CISF make an issue about letting a person into the terminal building to check-in when the name order appears switched? It may depend upon what is used for identification to enter the Indian airport.

I made a similar mistake last month when booking a flight from Bucharest to London on Tarom for October. First I tried sending them a polite note asking if they could change it. No answer. (And no US phone number. ) After reading this thread I decided I didn't want to count on having an understanding airline employee at Bucharest on the beginning of my trip back home.

Fortunately the flight was cancellable with an 87 Euro penalty. I booked a new one with the correct name and cancelled the old one by e-mail (couldn't do it on their site). They've been very good about responding to my e-mails promptly and asked me to confirm the refund amount, which I did, but they just told me it would take 45-90 days to reach my credit card! Oh, well. I printed the e-mail chain to a PDF in case I need to take it up with the credit card company.
