Customs at CLT vs MIA and layover time

Good Day! I hope this is the right topic to post under. Looking for advice on which flight to book and how long to leave for a layover. Coming back from an international flight with 2 small children I have the choice between flying into CLT or MIA to then catch a flight to Baltimore/DC. Any recommendations on which airport and how much time to leave for a layover? I know I have to get our bags then go through immigration and customs then drop our bags again for the connecting domestic flight. I've gotten burned before getting stuck in the line at customs in PHL and missing our connecting flight which was in a different terminal of the airport. Any info/advice is welcome! Thanks!

In general, CLT is a much better airport than MIA.

The walk from the aircraft to Immigration can be quite long at MIA

Depending on the terminal and gate the distance to baggage claim at MIA can be a long distance. With two small children that trip could take far longer than anticipated. If going through MIA allow ample time for all evolution's.

I'd urge CLT. Arriving internationally, the last thing you want to do (esp. with kids) is connect onto a long domestic flight. CLT to WAS is much shorter.

The only benefit to MIA, if you were traveling alone and had Global Entry, is that you could use the new facial recognition kiosks. No fingerprints, no questions. Hashtag technology, hashtag innovation.
