Personal data and emergency contact on 'US Passport'

On my daughter's US Passport on pages 4 & 5, I filled in 'personal data and emergency contact' (address and phone number) in pencil. I moved to the new apartment now. Do I have to update the address and phone number in that page? I could use an eraser and put the new information. But I don't know whether that is the right way to do it? Any suggestions, please.

That is absolutely what you would do - erase and enter new information. It's why they suggest you use a pencil. Especially for a child, it is crucial to have that information in there, though chances are she will not have her passport on her if she gets lost. However, entering those details is optional.

In US passports, you don’t need to fill it out; nor do you need to update the fields on that page. In practice it may make sense to fill out the info, but then it is mainly to increase the odds that a lost or stolen passport finds it way back to the person to whom it was issued or help contact the person’s listed contact in the event of an injury or death or other unfortunate incident.

Working at airport, I would highly recommend updating the information. An e-mail is pretty effective, too, considering how many people have smart phones.

I would suggest to always keep the current phone number and e-mail address in your passport while you are inside the US -- no need to provide your actual address. However, when I travel abroad, I usually write my temporary stay address in Personal Data section as well. There are still some good people in this world who might go an extra mile to return the passport to its righteous owner. Once I lost my wallet that had cash, credit cards and a driver's license at Disney World in France, and someone returned it fully intact to Lost and Found.
