Bringing a laptop through security
Would it be ok if I leave my laptop in a sleeve while going through security?
Thanks! |
Not entirely clear what country's security you're referring to, but I've had no problem doing so in the United States.

If you are talking about the US, it will depend on two things. First, whether you have Pre-Check and second, whether you have a so-called "TSA compliant" sleeve / case.
Pre-Check does not require you to remove your laptop from your carry-on at all. If the sleeve is "TSA compliant" you may put the item through the scanner in the sleeve. If you are unsure either ask or just put the laptop in its own bin without a sleeve or any other item and then put it back in its sleeve after the checkpoint. |
Thanks for the replies.
Yes I do have Pre-Check, but travelling internationally so Pre-Check doesn't apply there. How do I know if my sleeve is TSA compliant? Its just a basic sleeve. |
Pre-check most certainly does apply internationally if you are on a US carrier (or AC/WS).
Compliant sleeves are usually marketed as TSA-compliant because its a selling point. To be frank, it is likely easier to pull the laptop out and send it through. Even with a compliant sleeve, if anything blocks the laptop, it will be pulled out and you will wait while it's run through on its own. |

On the return flight, from outside of US, pre-check might help with special gate-security, but not the regular security. In my experience, many European airports require laptop out of sleeve, and tablet out of bag (although not out of the sleeves that are attached).
