Does TSA consider butter a non-solid?

Butter, in it's original packaging - is it considered a non-solid by TSA? I know that TSA considers peanut butter a liquid or gel-like substance and I have seen sealed cans of tuna taken away from passengers because they contain liquid. So I am curious about butter (not on a sandwich or roll) in it's original packaging.

I suppose that if it's solid when you take it across the checkpoint, it's all good. I did ask the TSA guy in PHX about Jello, and he said that I could carry the jello packets across the checkpoint, and prepare it airside, but I couldn't bring it prepared.

I've also wanted to take a non-newtonian fluid through the checkpoint, since it *can* be a solid.

Using that kind of langauge at a TSA checkpoint could be considered harrasment, no? Causing their heads to explode....maybe even assault!

But to the OPs question..he doesnt want to know what WE think, he wants a TSA opinion.

freeze it.

then use a lighter to light an aerosol can to thaw it, air side.

If peanut butter and lipstick are considered to be a liquid, then so is butter.

(Curious as to why someone would want to bother transporting butter, when it's easy to buy almost everywhere.)

Some people don't want to waste it which is what would happen if,one bought a pound of butter for a trip of a few days.

Also if they are making their own sandwiches airside or on the plane, butter is not likely to be available for purpose.

Lipstick is not considered a liquid/gel, though lipgloss is...

I've been quizzed many times as to whether I have lipstick, and been informed that "if you can pour it or smear it, then it's a liquid. You can smear lipstick, so lipstick is a liquid."

However, I once had a container of Johnson's baby powder confiscated at security, on the grounds that "you can pour it, so it must be a liquid."

Maybe it depends on the individual screener's state of mind on the day - don't expect it all to make sense!

Can I take Butter on the plane?

or would it need to get checked? It will be about 16 oz or so.

(We're wanting to bring spiced butter for hot buttered rum. I can see it being an issue in either checked or carry on.)

For carry on freeze it so it is not considered a gel. Otherwise check it.

Do they not have spiced butter where you are going?

Probably, but we already have a bunch of it, so it seems pointless to buy more when we get there.

Yes, freeze it. In a frozen state it is a solid.

From where to where are you flying?

It was all within the US. We left it behind as someone forgot to put it into the freezer in time.
