Residency cancellation
 

I am travelling to USA After 2 weeks .. I had a residency in uae and it expired so i had the choice between renewal or cancellation so i chose to cancel it as it would be better for me to go with a tourist visa as i am not staying there permenantly .. The issue is that a cancellation stamp was made on my residency in my passport .. I wonder what the us cbp will think about it if he saw it .. I wish he understands that its done voluntarily not as if i am deported

What they say/do likely depends on the nation that issued your passport, what you claim as your country of residence on the US entry form and possibly whether they notice the cancellati:on.

Are you a CITIZEN of the UAE and just gave up residency for whatever purpose? If not, what country are you a citizen of and hold a passport for?

I am Egyptian I hold egyptian passport. I have residency in UAE as my father works there , when residency expires u have choice to renew it or abandomn it, for me as i am studying in egypt its better to go on tourist visa as I am not staying permenantly there so I gave it up voluntarily and its all legal and organized practice. The officer then stamps "cancelled " on ur visa and it has no problem at all. I found out that other countries stamp cancelled on visas when the bearer does illegal act in their counties. I dont know when going USA will the cbo officer understand that the cancelled stamp is an ordinary practice or he will think that its like a punishment for illegal act

"Cancelled" just means it is no longer valid. It does not say anything about why it was cancelled. You will not have any problem. If you are asked why it was cancelled, you can reply.

But i think if someone did something wrong in a country the officer in that country will write notes about it in the passport , is that right ? Or not on all occasions

I have lots of cancelled and "not valid" stamps in my US passports and it's never been a show-stopper for me. I think I've been asked questions (about this) by government passport control types maybe two to four times over the history of my international travels. In other words, it's not been an issue for even 1% of my international trips. While YMMV compared to my situation, as long as your story comes across as legitimate and consistent -- if asked about the cancellation stamps -- it's unlikely to be a show-stopper for your international trips.

Great . Thank you. I understand that but do u have the word "cancelled" stamped . Not valid and expired and stuff like that are somehow clear or better than cancelled . But its the country's policy. I have no problem to tell him why it is cancelled but i wish he has his methods to know that its no problem , not think i am lying.

Is there a "deported" stamp ?

There have been "deport/deported" and "denied" stamps in passports, and those are more likely to cause issues when traveling or seeking visas. But then that too is a case of YMMV.

I've had "cancelled" words stamped or hand-written on my visa/residency stamps/stickers, and it's not been a problem for me.

No problem at all. I am a US Citizen and used to be a UAE resident. I got the "cancelled" mark on my UAE residence visa and nobody ever cared. Sometimes I was asked why I had been living in the UAE, but nothing about the cancellation.

You're worrying too much. :) As others have said, 'cancelled' is common terminology. And I wouldn't really be too concerned about US CBP being concerned about the nuance of terminology between 'cancelled' and 'not valid' :D
