why not?

if your carryon meets the size limits and you can pack them carefully.....

Indeed, packing them in your checked bag, even if gate checked to your next destination is a certain way to see them shattered.

Do it on a regular basis in both checked and carry on, and never had a problem. Don't think they were ever questioned when in the carry on.

Any idea why the person at SWISS would say it is not allowed?

Yah, not sure, but my friend emailed SWISS and they said it's fine so now he trusts me.
