Can I check-in Bic lighters?

Like these ones... for some reason, they don't sell these in HKG.

The TSA site wasn't being clear ASAIK.

it's on A TSA page that's hard to find

but basically no, not lighters in checked luggage except for those that can be and are drained of fuel and in special packaging.

The Bic Lighters can be drained of fuel OR enclosed in a special packaging which you can pick up from any Cigar shop or online for about $10-15.

That said, when it comes to checked bags even if you follow all the protocols they might "disappear"

Your mileage may vary, it seems to vary depending on which TSA agent you get, you could be carrying a 60 pack of them and they might not bat an eyelash or they might confiscate them.

Just don't try to carry them on the airplane as a carry on, I think they feel you'll try to burn the plane.

The typical BIC lighter (not the one shown) is permitted to be in carry-on. In fact, with fuel and not in special packaging, that is the only way it can travel on the plane.

My husband uses one of the DOT capsules. (looks like a giant, yellow pill capsule) He's a cigar smoker, so he drains his windproof cigar lighter and transports it in his checked luggage. He has never had a problem transporting his lighter this way. You have to have an empty lighter to put into these capsules.

I just started smoking cigars and I've been told by multiple people(including store owners) that the yellow capsules are useless and that it's better to just put the lighter in a travel humidor.

Does the TSA go through every bag that has cigars/lighters in it when it's checked luggage?

What a pain~ I guess we will see if it disappear. Maybe with a packaged one.... another reason why I hate those damn terrorists.

I don't know the consequenses of not using the capsule. At the very least your lighter will most likely be gone when you arrive at your destination.

I hope you don't check your cigars! Those will be gone when you arrive. I'm sure some light fingered clerk in the back will scoff them.If you spend as much as my husband does on cigars I wouldn't chance it. My husband packs his travel humidor in his carry on. Don't chance it by putting this lighter in your carry on. They WILL take it from you, especially where it is spelled out on their website that it must be packed in the DOT capsule. My husband has never had any problems using his. I don't get what you mean when you say they are useless. The only way you USE it is to transport your lighter.

Flammables in checked luggage were a big no-no long before TSA came into being.
