I do carry at least one or two small locking bags in my "Freedom Baggie" and have never had any problem with that, domestically or abroad.

I've traveled with all sorts of stuff in mini-zippy bags (inside my TSA bag) with no issues at all. We have a heat sealing machine for shipping items in the office which is extremely handy for making single-use sealed plastic bags.

I put a 1 ounce of so amount of shampoo in a plastic bag made for the purpose and seal it up. Same with many other items. I open the baggies at destination with a pin or cheap pen.

There are companies that make strips of plastic for such purposes, including one company called PacSecure http://pacsecure.com/

I have a second ziploc inside my quart-size ziploc to keep my toothbrush in a separate space from liquids. Then if my perfume or lotion leaks I don't have a toothbrush full of goo that I don't want to have inside my mouth. I know I don't need to keep the toothbrush in the ziploc, but I also don't want it just floating about in my suitcase, so there you have it.

In other words, your idea shouldn't be a problem, but I like the idea proposed earlier in the thread of your wife packing some of the small sample size items available at department stores or Sephora. That's what I do when I need something for a single special occasion on a trip but don't want to bring a whole extra tube of hair gel or whatever.

And how much do they charge for that? Even some mid range hotels charge for just receiving a package on your behalf.

However, a thought occurred to us. We have tiny pill bags (1 oz ziplock style bags) that would be perfect for freeing some space. They would fit into tiny spaces between bottles, wouldn't hold more than she needed, and are less than the 3.4 oz requirement. But...

We're not sure if the TSA would allow it. Can anyone shed light on this? Has someone tried this before and been allowed or denied? Any TSO's out there who would share a professional opinion on the matter? Any help would be appreciated, so we can plan on how she needs to pack.

I think you're overthinking this a little.

Using Ziplocs to hold liquids is undesirable due to the possibility of leakage. But there are several alternatives that can work for your wife.

1) Get some of the stuff she needs at the destination. She's going home for her sister's wedding, so the sister will be there, as well as a gaggle of bridesmaids; all she has to do is inquire ahead of time what brands of cosmetics they use, and at least some of your wife's brands will certainly be available to her, so she won't have to pack as much.

2) Buy some at the destination. Anything that's inexpensive enough to buy in small quantities when she gets there doesn't have to be packed.

3) Bit the bullet and check a bag. Yes, it may be a $25 fee (both ways) but that extra $50 makes it possible for your wife to properly pack not only her cosmetics, but her clothing and other items as well. She is going to take a nice dress with her for the wedding, isn't she? This will be difficult to pack in a carry-on bag without badly wrinkling, which will require her to dryclean or professionally press it on arrival. It's probably worth the $50 bag fees to avoid that, and to have all of her cosmetics packed properly to eliminate the possibility of leakage. Not having a Freedom Baggie in her carryon will also slightly speed your transit through the checkpoint.

1) sharing cosmetics is unhygenic and repeatedly warned against doing
2) the products may well not be available, especially if they are not 'drug store' brand items
3) virtually every 'nice dress' I own travels just fine in a carry on

I agree that OP may not really have an issue, but do not agree with you on your points.

In the OP's wife's situation (flying to a wedding), I think I'd be more inclined to try to carry my essentials on the plane. Yes, I know statistically the odds are that a checked bag will arrive with no problem, but I also know that if I'm attending a wedding and my personal toiletries are important to me and possibly difficult to find locally, I wouldn't take the risk.

Of course, I wouldn't take a risk checking the clothing I plan to wear to the wedding either.

Rather than use small ziplocks to fill crannies in the kippie bag, I'd probably transfer necessary amounts of everything to smaller containers and see if that frees up enough space for everything.

OP, I hope you come back and tell us what she ended up doing and how it worked out, any lessons learned.
