The sense I got from one of the discussions about answering TSO's questions was that some x-ray operators have some things that are a little suspicious, but not a lot, and if the passenger has a good explanation for it, they'll skip the bag check. To me, that seems like doing things right.
Sometimes when you see something that attracts your attention you know right away to call a bag check. And sometimes you ask questions, and once someone tells you what they THINK you are looking at, even if what they tell you is incorrect, sometimes something just clicks, and you can identify the object with enough certainty that no check is needed. Its actually common. |

My dad, whose skin tone is the same as mine, was selected for a rubdown (he has medical metal that alarmed the WTMD, but I don't think he alarmed the AIT, yet he was selected anyway). But I wasn't selected for a rubdown or extra bag screening. I got barked at by the TSO for not having my feet exactly on the footprints in the AIT, but went through without alarm or secondary screening. Did all of that have anything to do with their skin tones? Or mine? I seriously doubt it. TSO ranks are just full of average, run-of-the-mill American morons who are doing what they're told to get their paychecks, without thinking about it. |

It doesn't take even a genius to recognize that racists and other bigots do populate the TSA rank and file and bigoted TSA thinking is involved in how the TSA handles x-ray screening of say a collapsed stroller with a couple of diapers in it differently for different people. Social experiments run with controls aren't that hard to run, when there is a will to do so.
