which tsa devices are the "bad" ones?

At http://www.tsa.gov/approach/tech/ait/index.shtm the tsa shows an "open" scanning machine, and at http://blogs.wsj.com/middleseat/2011...ogle_news_blog there appears to be a "closed" scanning machine. Are these different systems or different pictures of the same system?
[I recently departed from msy (New Orleans) and was "required" to go through the first type, no notification of radiation or signs that one could opt out and request a "grope" instead.]

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trave...y-scanner.html

This link is "stickied" to remain at the top of the page of thread titles in this forum. There is a good description of the different types of scanners and a list of airports that currently have them installed.

edit to add: It's the backscatter machine that has radiation issues, the millimeter wave does not, there are other issues regarding the use of both.

There all bad (on many levels), and you arent required and they arent allowed to use them as primary either, but then again TSA doesnt think the laws of this country apply to them.

The one on the TSA link is a millimetre wave (MMW) and is slightly less bad than the one on the WSJ site, which is backscatter X-ray (BKSX).
