How sure are you that it would be of low probability? I'd do this if and only if I get to the airport decently in advance and would have enough time for all of that. Sheesh....I'm gonna have to take the box and bubble wrap and hide it in the bathroom or something, hahaha! Or ask my dad dropping me off to hold on in the cell phone waiting lot until I call him and let him know I'm okay or through. LOL.

Hmmmm. Sounds good, RadioGirl. You Aussies are awesome, you know that, right? ;) I'd love to visit your country/continent sometime.
On our domestic flights passengers can carry all the liquids they want. How awesome is that?! |

If they find the sauce, they will declare it a liquid and not allow you to carry it through. (According to TSA, peanut butter is a liquid. ) My only experience in Texas was a transit at DFW in about 1993, so I don't know how likely they are to find it at your particular airport.
In theory, if they find it, they should offer you the chance to go back and check in your bag; in practice, it has been widely reported here that TSA droids simply slam-dunk your bottle of "liquid" into the Rubbermaid trashcan before you have a chance to contemplate your other options. Again, I have no idea how likely this is at your airport. So my mention of "risk" was simply that you might lose the sauce. If you have to go through security again in ATL, you double the chances that they'll find the bottle or that they'll trash it. I'd go with the box and bubble-wrap solution.;) If you were to buy sauce inside the terminal, it wouldn't have to be scanned. |

No joints, but BBQ sauces at the shops. That's why I was babbling about shelf life. I'm transiting via Atlanta, I don't know Georgia cuisine, haha.
I like the idea of a box and bubble wrap. Easy, low-cost and simple. Seems like it would work, I'm just curious about how big the box should be, haha. |

Yeah, don't bother with the stuff in the shops... it is universally terrible. I checked ATL... no BBQ there at all
I think, if I have time, I shall try to go through with the carry-on with the box being backup. If I don't have time, I'll do the box. |

Shucks about ATL. I just bought the BBQ the other day, so it's fresh as can be. Some people don't like Rudy's, but I certainly do. Thought it would be a nice gift.

One of Austin's go-to places! I like Rudy's....but Salt Lick has a restaurant in the AUS airport, and sells bottles of their BBQ sauce there. It is NOT some generic sauce that's been sitting in there for ages. But it might not have that "kick" of Rudy's...their sauce is distinctive. Some of the shops do have some BBQ sauce, and might even have Rudy's (most of the stores and restaurants at AUS have a local connection), but it might be Jardine's instead (a local company that makes sauces and other condiment-type things). |
I love Salt Lick's BBQ sauce, but it's totally different than Rudy's, which I also like. Salt Lick is a little sweet and tangy...Rudy's is spicy and hot.
I think AUS does have a lot of Jardine's products and although I like some of their stuff (Hello, Peach Salsa I'm looking at you) I am not a huge fan of their BBQ sauces. I don't think I've seen any Rudy's out there. All of these are popular local products -- definitely not generic airport shop stuff. |
Ha, of course I've heard of the Salt Lick!! It's great! And I really didn't mean to malign the good Texas BBQ joints by talking about the bottles on the counter, I just meant all those random bottles from who-knows-what-BBQ-company.
However, having read through all of this and considering my options, I think the best course of action is to pack first. If I manage to not have to check in, I'll carry it on and buy a bottle in the terminal, keeping my own for my BBQ. ;) If I have to check in, I'll put my own bottle in the suitcase and not worry about it. Think that's a decent compromise? :) |
Freeze it! Frozen barbecue sauce is a solid, not a liquid. Be sure to take a copy of Bobīs Britney post to educate a TSO that eventually is awake enough to spot the bottle.

I'm flying to Germany tomorrow and I wanted to bring a bottle of hardcore Texas barbeque sauce for my friend over there. I wanted to bring my suitcase carry-on so I don't have to worry about anything, but then this morning I remembered about the barbeque sauce. TSA won't let me carry it in my bag, right? They'll confiscate it? THAT DEADLY BARBEQUE SAUCE, inducing dangerous hypertension via sodium overdose!!!!
Seriously, though, am I gonna have to check my stuff in because of the sauce? I really didn't want to have to do that. If your fiendish plot makes it past the ever vigilant TSA, it will probably pass through German customs just fine - that is unless their agents have actually experienced pit-cooked BBQ. Then all bets are off. You could always take the spices you need with you, then assemble and cook down your sauce when you arrive. The liquid ingredients should be readily available. |
Checked the bag in 'cuz I had too much stuff anyways....Germany is beautiful, very happy to be here!
Have a great day, everyone! Thanks for the help! |

Don't rick checking all of your stuff. Find a small box, wrap the bottle in bubble wrap, newspaper, or a hotel towel, tape it shut, and check the box.
I've done it frequently with wine. If the airline loses the box, no big deal. Losing my stuff would be much more annoying. |
I'm flabbergasted that a 4-year-old thread is resurrected almost to the day. Amazing. I'm really happy that it brought back some nice memories, though. And it was fun to read my old words! They feel ancient now.
And of course I've heard of the Salt Lick and ate a lot of 'cue there! And I miss Deutschland. |
