This has been going on in LAS. One of my recent trips the woman behind me got beeped by the WTMD and the TSO called out for assist, "RANDOM!".

TSOs emptied out the passengers carry-on bag and were in the process of giving her the full grope when I left the CP.

Emptying the carry-on?

That doesn't even happen during the opt-out pat-down

I'm going to assume that since this is (or was) a testing phase, those TSOs likely didn't know much about what they were supposed to do with the randoms. My limited experience with TSA trials tells me that TSOs don't really have a clue with the new stuff. Two of three opt-outs I've done were pretty much as expected, but one (during the 'enhanced' testing phase) was way out of line.

Unless that random selector hits infrequently, there's no way they'll have the manpower to do full bag searches on each one like this. Another possibility is that there was something in her bag they saw on xray and it had nothing to do with the selection.

Any way you look at it, gropes are always going to be a possibility whether we go thru WBI lanes or not. :(

Great, makes me even gladder that we are on our last trip for quite a while, at least the last one that will originate or terminate in the U.S.

On the other hand, this is a good move -- the sooner they grope those Kettles that fly ever other year, the faster their "80%" approval rating will nosedive.

We will win this one grope at a time.

To date, TOL is the only place (out of nine airports I have dealt with since 9/11) where I have received additional screening (randomized once through the WTMD, checked bag note once, SSSSed once). TOL lost my business after my SSSS experience ... and the guy in the photo (who oversees the airport for the port authority) can't figure out why the airport has lost two-thirds of its business in recent years.

There's some Class IV airports out there that you just have to wonder about the $200k+ (with install) cost.

A football referee signaling a touchdown??? HA HA HA!!! How about a criminal surrendering?

That's not the signal for a touchdown, anyway.

It happened to me on a slow day at PIT when I pissed them off by opting out.

Seems all of them are capable of doing a random selection and flashing a light to signal the person watching that you are the 'winner'.

And according to some reports, not so random.

And I automatically opt out if the additional screening includes an imaging machine ;)

"Thank you for your participation in our evaluation..." What a crock -- as if we had a choice.
