Gummy Bears
 

I know at one time right after 9/11 gummy bears were prohibited in carry-ons. Is this still the case or is it now ok? Am leaving on Tuesday for Europe and thought I would take some, but only take a carry-on.

haha.. i highly doubt that.. although my bags did get sent for a secondary inspection because i had some sneakers bars inside them... they must have melted or something.

I bought some gummy cherries at a shop past the John Tyner Memorial TSA Checkpoint in San Diego last week. What can I say, I was having a sugar jones. That said, I've never tried getting gummy anything past a TSA checkpoint, but I'd be pretty surprised if they made me toss them, but a war on gummy bears would be pretty tragic.

As a gummy bear mule between the US of A and Europe I can advise that I have had no problem. :D

Real question here, because the definition of liquids gels and pastes always eluded me: Gummy bears are OK, but jello or pudding are not. Why?

Just noticed you are leaving FOR Europe. May I ask why take gummy bears to the land of Haribo??? I always mule gummy bears FROM Europe...

It was just a thought, also thought of bringing some "American" candy such as See's etc. I remember once on the train travelling from Germany to The Netherlands there was a woman who boarded at the border, she had crossed into Germany to get gummy bears because she could not get them in The Netherlands, of course this was many years ago.

I don't think anyone in Europe likes Hersheys "chocolate" so don't bother with that !

Please don't give the TSA another idea what to add to the confiscation list! :mad:

Personally I agree. But one of my English cousins always asks for Hersheys Dark, Reses Pieces, and things like that. Go figure. I suppose the grass is often greener...

Good question. This is my own view on it, remember I wasn't invited to the party that created the criteria. Gummy Bears, or similar, in their regular form, before you pull them half melted out of your pocket, are for the most part, relatively solid. In other words, you can't readily spread them, like you can pudding or peanut butter, or things like that. Again, my own personal view. May not be the real reason but I'll go with that. ;)

It's surreal. Somewhere out there, there are actual terrorists planning acts of murder. And our government debates the relative merits and acceptability of gummy bears vs pudding.

So I just happen to fly with gummy bears and worms every time. Usually 2-3 bags of about 12 oz each. And a lot of other candy. Never had any issues with it. Never had a secondary screening on the bags. Apparently the TSA doesn't consider gummy anythings to be a gel.
Yesterday even went through with a 2 lbs tin of roasted peanuts and had no issues.

When I left Italy last month, my tub of Nutella was confiscated while the little packets were okay. Go figure. :rolleyes:

(Still regret I didn't think to get the good stuff out of the tub and put as much as I could onto my croissant and eat it on the spot. :mad:)

I am still thoroughly confused about the TSA definition of states of matter, but of course it does not matter, since the final word is with the TSO at the frontline. Nutella, obviously, is too delicious to fly.

You should definitely be able to fly with Gummy Bears on this plane.

Not gummy bears, but I've gone through various airports with cream filled chocolates, tootsie rolls, reeses peanut butter cups, snickers, milky ways, most candies.

Also just this weekend through SNA my companion sent through a styrofoam take-out container with BBQ ribs, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and rolls all fresh from the restaurant. Nobody said a word or gave it a second glance.

gravy must've been in 3.2 oz containers or less.

TSA at DCA did a secondary check of my bag on Sunday afternoon because of home made chocolate Christmas candies. My cooking is pretty good, darn it, and certainly not a terrorist threat!

That said, DCA's TSA seems to be comparatively reasonable -- I suspect it's because they could be terrorizing one of their own senior bosses and not know it.

Last Thanksgiving I was flying out and my mom packed me my entire dinner in a tupperware and stuffed it in a zippy. Granted, she didn't send the gravy, melted butter or cranberry (don't know if that's a paste or a gel...). They just chuckled. Maybe they were laughing at the nasty note that was on it that told TSA to back off her daughters dinner...:eek:

That should explain why states of matter are so important, and why so many TSA clerks seem to fixate on yummy food.
