Needlepoint needles....can I carry-on?
Wanted to bring my needlepoint project on our vacation. We are flying and will have carry-on only.
Can I put a couple needle point needles ( the look like sewing needles) in my carry-on? |
I've managed to in the past (July 2010). And the TSA website says they are allowed:
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtrav...rial_1252.shtm As always though, your mileage may vary. I would advise that you put them with everything else in your bag and not draw attention to them in any way. Bringing it to their attention just means that they have to make a choice about the object and they may decide to go with "abundance of caution" rather than the rules if they aren't familiar with the rules. If you don't have a copy of the rules with you (and even if you do) they may decide to just confiscate them. |
My wife leaves some of hers in her project bag, and others in her suit jacket lapels. The ones in her suit have such low mass they never alarm the WTMD, and they aren't concealed to the point they can be called "artfully concealed" although you could probably sneak 100 such needles in your clothing.
I've learned never to give her a hug in the neck region when she's wearing her traveling jacket. |
I travel with beading tools and needles in my carryon all the time, and have never been given a second look.

Yes, you can carry those on!

I carry mine! I wrap my needles and put them in the side pocket of my carry on where I keep a couple of pens. Never gets noticed. But you can carry them on.
I also bring scissors (blunt edge of course). |
I routinely travel with my knitting stuff, which includes several blunt and sharp needles in a needle case. I've never had a problem with it domestically (or at least not recently.) The fact that they are small and mixed in with other items probably disguises them. My knitting bag clearly looks like "a knitting bag," which is usually sufficient. At most, domestic security might ask what I'm working on. A few months back the guy sitting behind me was tying a quilt and had a toolbox with him, including some substantial thread snips.
International is another story, I've found. The tiny airport in Italy we go through gets Very Unhappy about quite a number of things including safety pins and kiddie scissors. I've switched to wood and plastic knitting needles only and use nail clippers to cut yarn. Any small metal items are of a sort that I could stand to lose them if pressed. |
